“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

Theatre isn't just about sitting in a dark room, it’s about connecting with the world around us. Our Wilde in Ryde actor, Si Lynch, shared a beautiful reminder about why projects like Stories Underfoot matter so much:

“Creativity belongs to everyone. Draw a picture. Write a poem. Perform a scene. Sing a song. Put the screen down. Observe, be observed, listen, speak, be present.”

Join us on Sunday, June 14th, (tomorrow!) to put the screens away for a morning, step into the sunshine, and celebrate a man who knew exactly how to make language dance.

"We often speak with Wilde’s voice, though perhaps we do not realise it.”

Ever wondered how a piece of historical street theatre comes to life?
Meet Jason Watts, the brilliant playwright behind our upcoming Wilde in Ryde performed walk!

To build the script, Jason dove deep into the archives, basing the structure on Wilde's own fashion manifesto, "The Philosophy of Dress".

📝 A Note From Jason:
“It contains, unsurprisingly, some marvellous quotes on the condition of the English wardrobe of the time, its joys and pleasures as well as its crimes... I feel deeply honoured to have been able to help to remind a modern audience of the wit and wonder of Oscar Wilde.”

Join us on Sunday, June 14th, to hear how Jason has woven Wilde's timeless wit into a vibrant, walking celebration of our local history.

StoneCrabs' Out On An Island team are delighted to be taking part in Book Fairies With Pride this year. Throughout June we will be hiding books across the Island for you to read and share. There are 500 books being shared across the UK.

About the book: The Disappearers by Marlon James

Content note: ADULT - very adult sexual scenes throughout the novel and from the start.
When eight gay men meet for the first time, in Kingston in 1988, answering the casting call for an openly q***r play, they are already taking a big risk. But that is nothing compared to what rains down on them when a mob descends on one of their rehearsals. By the end of this night, one man is dead, all are injured, and two subsequently disappear.

'Sometimes I wish what I wrote sounded like Prince lyrics'.

"To know that Wilde himself once walked these streets made the experience feel deliciously immediate."

Meet Si Lynch, the brilliant actor bringing the legend back to life for our Wilde in Ryde Promenade Walk on Sunday, June 14th!

Stepping into the shoes of the "Apostle of Aestheticism" is no small feat. Si shares what it felt like to embody Oscar's delightful arrogance and charm under the Isle of Wight sun:

“Standing outside Hughes & Mullins photography studio in Ryde, where his famous white-suited portrait was taken, was a thrill... The audience were Wilde fans, so I could have a little fun with them, and they leaned right in. Sun blazing, sea roaring along Ryde Esplanade, hovercraft humming in the distance... it was theatre in the wide, unpredictable world.”

Don't miss the chance to walk, laugh, and promenade with Oscar and Si from Union Street all the way to the cool shade of Appley Tower!

"Beauty comes always from freedom."

When Oscar Wilde lectured in Ryde, the Victorians expected a ridiculous spectacle. Instead, they found themselves completely won over by his "Philosophy of Dress"!

Wilde championed a total wardrobe revolution: outlawing tight corsets, rejecting boring trends, and declaring that clothes should complement the human form rather than restrict it.

Ahead of our promenade walk on June 14th, we’re taking notes from the master of style himself:

Rule 1: Simplicity of one colour is best if you want to look tall and graceful.

Rule 2: Clothes must hang from the shoulders, never the waist.

Rule 3: Never sew on useless bows or flounces just for the sake of fashion.

What will you be wearing to walk the promenade with Oscar?

What are your dressing up rules?

"A fashion is merely a form of ugliness so absolutely unbearable that we have to alter it every six months!"

142 years ago, the "Apostle of Aestheticism" himself, Oscar Wilde, stepped off the ferry and onto the streets of Ryde to deliver his legendary lecture, "On Dress," at the Ryde Town Hall.

On Sunday, June 14th at 10:30 AM, the witty Wilde returns!

Join StoneCrabs Theatre for Wilde Ryde, an immersive promenade walk tracing Oscar’s exact 1884 footsteps.

Led by Si Lynch in Wilde’s iconic white suit, we will saunter down Union Street, explore our local history, and promenade all the way to Appley Tower.
