Nigel Farage's Reform party has declared it wants to “drill baby drill” if it wins the next general election. There’s a temporary pause on fracking in England, but it’s not even written into law. So it would be all too easy for any future government to allow fracking to start again. This wou...

This is an inspiration that is so timely: Wool fibre can take a lot of water to wash properly adding to environmental pollution. Woolfibre is also a passport to community well being, especially after trauma. Now imagine both put together constructively by using the dirty water for wool washing first and then that feeding the ground. I just love the simplicity of the design and concept. Where can I get one to trial it?! 💕🔗

Wonderful work

Claudia Alarcón is an indigenous textile artist from the La Puntana community of Wichí people of northern Salta, Argentina. Alongside her own artistic practice, she leads the Silät collective, an organisation of over one hundred women weavers of different generations from the Alto la Sierra and La Puntana Wichí communities.

Weaving in Wichí communities is a female-led, communal and ancestral practice that is passed down through generations. For centuries, thread from the local chaguar plant has been spun to create bags like the ones pictured and fishing nets. Since 2015, with curator Andrei Fernández's support, large-scale works depicting geometric forms with different messages and symbols, like the ones currently shown in the First Floor gallery, have been created.

‘The geometric shapes we make in the fabric have meanings; each one is a message. Some shapes reference birds, footprints, cat’s eyes, our landscape. In the images we recall our ancestors and see that they are still part of us.’ – Claudia Alarcón

You can see Claudia Alarcón & Silät, Tayhin, until Sunday 14 September.
