The CityQuests team has temporarily downed tools, packed the notebooks, and stepped away from the case files…

We’re officially out of office. ✉️

But don’t worry — this isn’t the end of the story.
We’re off gathering fresh ideas, testing new trails, and possibly being outfoxed by a suspiciously clever pigeon somewhere… 🐦

“Here’s a good one about Durham…

Durham Cathedral sits high on a rocky peninsula almost completely surrounded by the River Wear.

It was designed that way for protection nearly 1,000 years ago, turning the cathedral into a natural fortress.

A clever bit of medieval city planning.”

🧭 Bert’s City Fact #4 – York

“Here’s something curious about York…

The famous street called The Shambles is so narrow that in medieval times the buildings leaned so far over the road that neighbours could almost shake hands from their upper windows.

Originally it was home to butcher shops, and the wide shelves outside the buildings were used to display meat.

Thankfully today it smells a lot better.”

🧭 Bert’s City Fact #3 – Newcastle

“Here’s a brilliant bit of history about Newcastle…

The city’s famous Tyne Bridge was completed in 1928 and its design later inspired the much more famous Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia.

So in a way, a little piece of Newcastle engineering made its mark on the other side of the world.”

Not bad for a bridge over the Tyne.

“Here’s something interesting about Liverpool…

The city’s famous waterfront, including the Royal Liver Building, was once part of one of the busiest ports in the entire world.

At its peak in the early 1900s, ships were arriving and leaving Liverpool carrying goods, people, and stories from across the globe.

Quite the gateway to the world.”

“Here’s something curious about Chester…

The famous Chester Rows you see along the streets aren’t just pretty architecture. They’re actually a series of covered walkways built above street level, with shops on two different floors.

Some historians believe parts of the Rows date back to the 13th century, making them one of the most unusual shopping streets in Britain.

So as you explore, keep your eyes open. In Chester, the street you’re walking on… might not be the only one.” 👀
