It’s been the busiest summer ever for DJ Methodz! A 5-week Healthy Holidays Hull project at the The Albemarle Music Centre; weekly sessions at The Warren Youth Project; Humber Street Sesh; workshops in Skegness and Lincoln for SoundLincs; a full day at the Secure Unit in Sleaford; private 1:1 lessons in people’s own homes; and this visit to Leconfield Recreation Club for the East Riding Young Carer’s event.

I can’t recommend this venue enough! From a workshop delivery point of view, I was able to park right outside of the venue and transfer my equipment from the van to the main hall via a path that runs around the outside of the building - I use a trolley so the path needs to be flat and wide enough for DJ gear.

There is a ramp to the entrance doors which open automatically (brilliant for anybody who uses a wheelchair). Set up was much the same as any venue for me, but I was really impressed by the other facilities such as the outside space, which includes a sensory garden.

Definitely worth checking out!

To say my DJs did me proud at this year’s Humber Street Sesh would the biggest understatement ever!!

DJ Methodz takes control of The Residents Association stage between 12pm-3pm, creating the vibe to follow.

Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to all of the team. Bradley, the first DJ with additional needs to perform on this stage, told us he had a tear in his eye after achieving a lifelong dream. Respect 🤜🤛

Learning to DJ with 100% sight loss.

Emily's Battle with Batten means she has to rely on me to tell her which tune to select, but from there she is now able to locate the SYNC button before placing one hand on the play button and her other hand on the pitch bend.

Emily doesn’t like wearing headphones, so after dropping the next tune in I tell her whether to speed it up or slow it down to synchronise the mix before fading in. From there, Emily is now capable of chopping faders, using slip roll on the pads and utilising the paddle FX - for a full hour without breaking the flow of the music.

This photo was taken outside of the Lincolnshire Secure Unit in Sleaford, where over the last year I have delivered three separate projects of 6-7 weeks on behalf of SoundLincs.

I can’t share pics of the DJs because I’m not allowed to take my phone in for security and safety reasons. I can’t even wear my SoundLincs lanyard in case it is used as a weapon.

Who knew this place would take on such meaning? From day one, the staff and more importantly the young people made me feel so genuinely welcome. They have treated me with a level of respect and appreciation I have rarely experienced anywhere in life.

As a result, I have produced some of my very best work. Last week, two DJs who I have taught separately agreed to do a b2b set during break time (a reward for positive engagement). Meaning one DJ on each deck, not swapping over every few tunes.

Experienced DJs have told me they wouldn’t try this with their closest friends! I’ve seen House DJs do it, but mainly focusing on the mix ’n’ blend, not the FX. But two D&B DJs with the potential for a personality clash? It shouldn’t have worked.

What we witnessed was 30 minutes of pure Jungle D&B fire 🔥 complete with slip rolls, stems use and paddle FX! The DJs were so immersed in what they were doing they forgot their tea, biscuits and ice pops (we’ve come a long way from ’no lanyards’).

Something magical happened in that teaching room - I wrote down words like chemistry, and telepathy. It touched my soul. At one point during their mix, one of the DJs started dancing and the other shouted “Sick AF” and they shook hands. For a moment, it felt like teaching people to DJ couldn’t get any better.

Over the last few months, The Warren Youth Project DJ sessions have evolved. By the time I arrive, the decks have already been set up by one or more of the DJs and the tunes are rolling.

Every week the room is full of DJs, which is causing me a bit of a headache trying to ensure everyone gets a fair amount of time on the decks!

But even after I leave, a few will stay to carry on mixing. It’s taken a long time to get here but what has been created goes way beyond what could have been expected.
