We are very saddened to hear of the passing of our dear dance friend Eileen Fenton MBE.

Eileen was a truly remarkable lady who lived an extraordinary life. She made sporting history when she became the first woman to complete the inaugural International Cross-Channel Swimming Race, swimming from France to England in around 15½ hours.

She later devoted many years to coaching and encouraging others in swimming, and in 2019 her outstanding contribution was recognised when she was awarded the MBE for voluntary service to long-distance and competitive swimming coaching.

Those of us in the dancing world will, however, remember Eileen simply as our lovely dance friend. Dancing became a very important part of her later life, and over the years she became a familiar and much-loved face at dances, events and on dance holidays.

It was a privilege to know Eileen and to share the dance floor with her and to call her a friend.

She lived a remarkable life and will be very sadly missed by all of us who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Eileen’s family and friends at this very sad time.

Rest in peace, Eileen. It was an honour to have known you. ❤️
