📖‘Dear Diary’ will be a fun, creative drop‑in inspired by much‑loved diary‑style books such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Extremely Embarrassing Life of Lottie Brooks.📖

In partnership with Crescent Arts and The National Literacy Trust, local artist Jayne Shipley has created a collection of original, humorous characters in this style, displayed in the Glass Box to spark children’s imagination.

During their visit, children will explore the artwork and have a go at creating their own diary entries. Through a mix of art, storytelling and playful prompts, the session helps build confidence in writing and self‑expression, making it enjoyable for both reluctant and enthusiastic readers.

Each child will also receive a free book to take home, encouraging them to keep reading for pleasure.
We will also offer stories for younger children and offer a drop-in day for early years families (Thursday) to access story-telling resources for home and find out about story-times on the coast during the summer holidays.

Dates and times are:

Thursday 4th June, 11 am-3pm - Early Years family drop-in and book gifting

Friday 5th June, 3pm-5pm - Dear Diary after-school drop-in for 7–11-year-olds and book gifting

Saturday 6th June, 11 am-3pm - Dear Diary drop-in for 7–11-year-olds and book gifting

✨Throwback Thursday ✨ to when Jason Wilsher-Mills was beside the Scarborough sea!
Jason’s exhibition in 2024/25 was full of colour with larger-than-life characters filling the floors and walls of Woodend Gallery.
In light of our support of Town Of Culture, we continue having conversations with more amazing artists like Jason, and look forward to putting on more vibrant and engaging exhibitions!

“I felt so much joy when I exhibited there myself at Wood End gallery in 2024. I loved working there and have a great deal of respect for the team, as I was so fully supported as a disabled person and artist.
Scarborough should receive this huge accolade, because it is a magical town, which welcomes everyone and creates memories which last a lifetime,
There is a myth that says anything can happen in the place where the sky meets the sea. This is Scarborough.” - Jason Wilsher-Mills 2026

✨Throwback Thursday ✨ to 2022/23 exhibition Queen Green - in Woodend Gallery artist Susie Green presented work inspired by her residency at Dalby Forest in the North Yorks Moors. The exhibition celebrated erotic encounters with nature, and moments of confidence and fragility, growth and decay, lightness and dark. Works on paper and large cut-out mixed forms were mounted onto wooden trellis to portray powerful, blossoming, shapeshifting bodies.

Our partnership continues with Dalby Forest - keep an eye out for upcoming workshops and exhibitions this spring!

Public Notice - Crescent Arts Update

From February 2026, Crescent Arts will no longer programme exhibitions at Woodend Galleries following recent changes in management at Scarborough Museums and Galleries.

Since our founding in 1979, Crescent Arts has supported Scarborough’s visual arts community for over four decades through affordable studio provision, a year-round exhibitions programme, and a wide range of workshops and public events. Our commitment to sustaining and strengthening the town’s cultural life remains steadfast.

We are grateful for the opportunity to have delivered exhibitions at Woodend Gallery since 2020 and for the role the venue has played in connecting artists and audiences over the past five years.

We are currently reviewing and developing our future exhibitions programme alongside our ongoing outreach work. We look forward to announcing new opportunities to collaborate with local artists and partners in the near future.

In an increasingly challenging funding environment, we welcome support from individuals, organisations, and businesses. If you are able to offer exhibition space, provide financial assistance, or explore partnership opportunities, please contact us.
