Graduation of Couch to 5K
On the 13th March 2026 run leaders from Scarborough AC waited in anticipation to welcome complete beginners that had signed up for a nine-week program "Couch to 5K". Would anyone turn up? We were not disappointed. There were some worried faces and comments, such as, "I don’t think I can do this, I’ve never run before". However, after the initial week, confidence began to grow and the group progressed forward with increasing determination towards their 5 km goal!
Today was the final test or graduation as we began to affectionately call it.
Meeting time at the North Yorkshire Water Park Parkrun was 8.30am to enable the runners to warm up prior to the start. The weather wasn’t great and the rain made an unwelcome appearance early on but this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the runners. Warm up done and we headed to the start. It was quite humbling to think that our goal also coincided with the millionth Parkrun, which started at Bushy Park 20 years ago.
After the safety talk and a shout out to our group from the Race Director (which raised a loud cheer,) it was on to the run. "Runners ready"? "Timekeepers ready"? and then "Go"!! We were off! The rain had stopped and the sun even made an appearance.
Each C-2-5K graduate ran with a member from SAC, that supported and encouraged them throughout the run. The completion of the first lap was marked with loud cheering from the marshals and other spectators, the runners all dug in deep and commenced the second lap. Before they knew it, the finish line was in sight and they were collecting their finishing tokens, registering their positions and checking their times!
Turning up to participate in any sport is often the hardest thing to do. They all proved it doesn’t matter if you’ve never run before, with an amazing show of determination they all completed the 5 kms. Some achieving their own personal goals along the way. There was every emotion on finishing, but one thing was for sure, once they had caught their breath the big smiles followed and the achievement began to sink in. Celebrations afterwards encompassed hot drinks from the on-site cafe and homemade cakes accompanied by the uplifting stories of everyone’s personal journey.
