Sawston Youth Drama

Sawston Youth Drama Sawston Youth Drama is one of the largest amateur musical theatre companies in Cambridgeshire.

In 1968, the Sawston Youth Centre Drama Group was formed to cater to a few young people wanting to improvise some drama. By 1970 the group had switched tracks to draw in bigger cast numbers and battled the local authority for funding, producing the first official performance, "Oklahoma!". 28 years later the group had become a highly regarded and well attended musical theatre company, and was hande

d over to current leader Mark Long. The group became Sawston Youth Drama, and continued to thrive, eventually splitting to form SYD Juniors in 2005, and then further to SYD 7s as well in 2009. Last year we officially relaunched after being closed down due to COVID, with some restructuring to only 2 groups SYD Seniors for years 9 until age 18 and SYD Juniors years 7 & 8.

Wow Seniors! What a week! You rose to the occasion and poured everything you had into this show and we couldn’t be more proud of each and every one of you.

Thank you for the killer vocals, stunning dances and fantastic work ethic. You have knocked the socks off of every audience this week with your talent.

I can officially say, you have saved Rock and Roll. 🎸🤘🏼

Congratulations to the creative teams who brought this show together - what a start to the Marven Centre’s send off!

Tonight is likely to be the last time that SYD seniors will perform its annual production in the building that has been its home since 1969!
The Marven centre will hopefully be completely refurbished in 2027 to provide a new modern space for SVC & a new beginning for SYD!
For the last 57 years the senior group has presented 56 full scale musicals in the building starting with Oklahoma & now finishing with a production of We Will Rock You!
During this time over 800 young people have performed on the stage to audiences totalling 33,000 people!
Thank you to a wonderful building for looking after us all these years! We will all miss you & think of you fondly with some great memories!
