Gray's Stone Carving Studio

Gray's Stone Carving Studio Bespoke, Hand-Carved Memorials, Sculpture and Inscriptions in Stone. Also with the aim of passing these traditional skills on.

Gray's Stone Carving Studio was set up to continue providing excellent quality design and manufactured stone work of all kinds. The owner, Henry Gray has been carving stone since 1995. Trained as a Stonemason his view on Sculpture and carving is firmly rooted in the craft. He was involved with the restoration of the West front of Salisbury Cathedral and has worked for commercial masonry and conser

vation companies. In recent years he has been concentrating on making Sculpture. Current output is diverse in theme and style. Which includes full size figurative ecclesiastic figures to small “Golems” and more abstract pieces based on Japanese Culture. His main influences are Patience Gray, Norman Mommens, Corinna Sargood and Medieval Figurative Sculpture
In 2012 he will be concentrating on developing his portfolio and the workshops further; exploring contemplation and divinity as themes and making pieces which reflect this.

This is one of our very happy students from last weekend. She was amazed that she was able to produce this paw print in a 1-hour 'Have-a-go' session. This prized piece was for a special spot in her garden. If you missed these special 'Have-a-go' sessions, we will be doing more of them at the Chalk Valley Fete on Sat 15th August at the Broadchalk Cricket Ground - come along and create your own special piece with us.

As the packing up continues after The Salisbury Arts Trail - we gain back some space in our studio but the walls are now going to seem so bare. It was a busy period or us but great to share our space with other artists who could occasionally man the studio and welcome guests for us. Did you visit? Did you like the mix of artists at our venue? Did you feel inspired?

So the last few days have been all about packing things away after The Salisbury Arts Trail - What an event! Well done to everyone involved. It was so great to display our work alongside others. The place sure is going to seem quiet for a while. There was a real buzz in the air on the evening of our private viewing, before the trail got started, as we welcomed over 60 friends, artists, family members & neighbours through our doors. It's all about the networking - right? Then, during the course of the 2 weeks, we had over 150 visitors and 20 who booked into our 1 hr 'have-a-go' sessions. If you missed out on any of this, keep an eye out here for our next opportunities.

Once a piece of stone has been chosen and a design created, there comes the time for shaping. Here, Henry is getting the angles just right on this headstone. What do they say? "Measure twice"....

Everything is hand-made here at Gray's Stone Carving Studio and the sketching and letter planning is something that we take time to get correct. We show our customers our work at key points in the creative process, as we want them feel like they can have input. This is a close-up of some lettering in the very early stages.

Did you see these in the studio if you visited for the Arts Trail? Henry has carved several similar panels over the years. They seem to be popular with clients, maybe because of the sense of peace they create. Henry's past designs have always been slightly diferent and this one has the hidden word 'Kindness' in the sand lines......did you spot it? We can incorporate other ideas too for commissions like this and our customers often have input into our initial ideas.

So it's the last weekend of the Arts Trail. Our last few 'have-a-go' sessions are running today and tomorrow (sat 6th & Sun 7th). If you haven't managed to book in, I'm sure we'll be offering something similar soon, or you could try one of our half-day courses. Our students tell us that making memories like this is relaxing, mindful and creative. They get to take their work home to enjoy it too.

There are just a few more days left of the Arts Trail. Our doors are open until Sunday 7th June at 4pm and you can book in for a 'have-a-go' session this weekend for £15. You'll get a 10cmx10cm stone tile to work on and we will help you with the techniques. We would love to see you. It's worth the drive in our opinion as it's only about 20 mins from Salisbury and there are 3 other venues close to us, 34,35 and 36. Come out to the countryside and enjoy some fab art works.
