Last weekend to catch this brilliant exhibition and see my Pizza Box Sea at the Hastings Contemporary. This show celebrates the creative force of Sussex, bringing together artwork by over 150 artists from across the region. Each work offers a unique and personal reflection on the theme of Odyssey, journeying through time, place, imagination and experience.

The exhibited works were selected from over 2,600 entries, and span painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, textiles, ceramics, sculpture, film and installation, reflecting the ambition, diversity and creative bravery of the region.

This milestone, gallery-wide exhibition includes artists of international renown; Jennifer Binnie, Rachel Howard, Gary Hume, Martin Maloney, Alessandro Raho, Anne Ryan, Andrew Sabin and presents an exciting snapshot of artistic excellence in Sussex in 2026. All works will be available to purchase.

Theme: Odyssey
This theme reflects on journeys shaped by tides, time, and transformation, on the restless call of the sea and the stories it inspires. Hastings, a place long defined by its proximity to the coast, provides a fitting setting for such explorations.

This is one of my favourite one off Cyanotype works now on show in London Rd. My sea work captures the salty wind, watery light and changing weather of our vast skies of the coast. This a lovely write up from curator extrodinaire about me and my going’s on:- Her mixed media practice is project-led, and rooted in experimental analog photography. Louise is always searching for striking image-making, alongside curating the exhibition space at Barnaby’s, devising many Strutty Wutty musical numbers and generally branching across music, moving image and performance art. She has exhibited most recently in Hastings Contemporary.

Las few days to see. Pizza Box Sea Installation one of 16 pictured right, is in the Hastings Contemporary at the moment. Pizza Box Sea is part of my project to use less toxic photographic processes and use up-cycled materials to reject the commercial and the archival alternatives. In this work I want to transmit the disquiet, anger and conflict of knowing that our beautiful sea is teaming with household waste and worse beneath I mixed images of Bexhill Tip and waves were alternated The images of crashing waves taken on a windy sunny day in Hastings with a borrowed canon camera. Coating the Cyanotype liquid directly onto the pizza boxes was fun but it took a long time to dry in the drawers After 24 hours I placed cut up A3 photocopies of the images soaked in oil and popped a piece of clean glass on the top. compositionally I wanted to investigate the golden section as a reference to painting. Then I left each one under a UV lamp for 40 minutes. On one ofvthem I used direct sunshine which didnt work as well. washing out the image from cyanotype coating meant the pizza boxes lost their shape. The one in the Contemporary is sold but the others are available to buy The entire work of a 16 boxes can be recreated Please ask. .contemporary photography photography
