MARK SPELMAN
‘You Weren’t There’
Opening event
Saturday 27th June 6-8pm
Mark Spelman worked on and off in the Middle East as an Art handler for over 10 years. He once pulled a six month shift in a small desert town that was being reconfigured as a Premium Art Destination, after which he decided to form his own religion. That didn’t work out so well. These works on paper are a homage to the time he has spent there, the influence of the wider regional culture and the occasional struggles he had making sense of what he was doing there, why he was doing it, and for what purpose. They are the kind of contradictions that can only occur when you find yourself in-between cultures, jobs and meaning. They are illuminations: of time squandered, traded and well spent, as well as the kind of mythologies that you create through endless repetition of the same stories, told to the same people in the back of a van.
Exhibition runs until 25th July
