The Penwith Gallery is home to the Penwith Society of Arts and was founded as a tribute to the artist, Borlase Smart, a person who believed in promoting and encouraging artists and their art. A list of past members reads like a "Whose Who" of the British Moderns, Hepworth, Nicholson, Heron, Wynter, Berlin, Lanyon, Frost; names that made St Ives a true tour de force in the world of art. Set in the

artistic heart of St Ives on Back Road West, the gallery is now getting a well earned make over. The gallery and society's aim is to create a vibrant community hub where artists and the public can feel connected to the history of St Ives whilst playing a part in shaping its future. Gallery space is available to rent for individual or group exhibitions.

'Alf' is a new play based on the story of Alfred Wallis. A retired fisherman turned amateur painter, Alf is โ€˜discoveredโ€™ by two celebrated artists visiting his home town of St Ives. He is hailed as a genius, and becomes the toast of the London art scene for his โ€˜naiveโ€™ artistic style, which is really justโ€ฆ the way someone might paint if they never learned how. All he wanted was a quiet retirement but, instead, Alf is thrust into a world he doesnโ€™t understand by people who donโ€™t understand him. Who would honestly think โ€˜artistโ€™ is a proper job? Why are rich people who act like theyโ€™ve never seen a boat so interested in pictures of them? And why the hell do people seem to think it might take more than a couple of hours to paint a whole picture? Alf is a funny and relevant examination of class, creativity, and the value of art.

Join us for a play reading of Alf!

18.00pm, Saturday 30th May
FREE to attend
Drinks available

Alf is a new play inspired by the life of Alfred Wallis, the St Ives fisherman whose extraordinary paintings changed the course of modern British art.
What happens when an ordinary man who paints for his own pleasure is suddenly declared a genius by the London art world? Funny, moving and sharply observant, Alf follows Wallis as he is thrust from a quiet retirement into a world of galleries, critics and collectors that makes little sense to him. Through humour and wit, the play explores creativity, class, identity and the often uneasy relationship between art and authenticity.
