The New Craftsman Gallery

The New Craftsman Gallery Established in the mid 60’s by Janet Leach, The New Craftsman is the oldest independent commercial gallery in St Ives. A position he held for over 50 years.

The New Craftsman is the oldest commercial gallery in St Ives. Originally established by Janet Leach, wife of Bernard Leach and an acclaimed potter in her own right in the 1960s, Janet was later joined by Mary "Boots" Redgrave as business partner. Boots in turn brought with her Michael Hunt as manager. The New Craftsman is currently owned by Paul and Ylenia Haase, who are delighted to be involved

in such a fascinating Gallery. The team of staff are very helpful and knowledgeable about the work displayed in the gallery and the craftspeople who produce it. Initially focusing on paintings, sculpture and quality studio pottery, New Craftsman gained an international reputation amongst discerning art and craft collectors. It was regarded by some as one of the most important spaces for contemporary painters in St Ives, nurturing the reputations of figures such as Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, Bryan Winter, Patrick Heron and Peter Lanyon. It then widened its range to ceramics regularly showing works by Lucie Rie and Hans Coper. Now, it shows original paintings by emerging Cornish artists alongside a varied range of quality contemporary crafts including glass, automata, wood, handmade jewellery, ceramic sculptures and metalwork.

A snapshot showing a small detail from Flow by Sarah Purvey, where surface, weight and gesture settle into something both grounded and fluid.

Sarah Purvey’s monumental forms carry a palpable sense of time: layered, weathered, and instinctively made. Their scale invites a slower encounter where each mark held, each shift in tone revealing the rhythm of the making.

A magical light moment captured in our upstairs gallery..…
We’re delighted to reintroduce two concurrent exhibitions:
Emma Jeffryes - Of Time and Tide
Sarah Purvey - Flow
Together, they create a gentle dialogue between surface and form, sea and earth.

Do come and experience the works in person in our upstairs galleries, or explore both exhibitions in full via our website.

When the Veil Drops, Susan Bleakley’s paintings invite slow looking. A quiet unfolding of grids, rhythms and subtle shifts of colour. Seen together in the gallery, the works hold a meditative stillness, where structure and intuition gently meet.

Marking his 90th birthday, Colin Orchard’s St Ives | Shapes & Shadows reflects a lifetime’s quiet observation of the town he calls home. His paintings, rooted in the architectural geometry and tonal subtleties of St Ives, reduce the familiar streets to their essence with planes of light and shadow that speak of decades spent studying this unique place.

Bathed in soft natural light, Sarah Woods’ latest exhibition at the New Craftsman Gallery, St Ives captures the quiet poetry of the Cornish coast.
Her pared-back palette and horizon-led meditative compositions invite a sense of calm — an effortless dialogue between art, interior and atmosphere.
