WELCOME TO THE HOUSE OF SURF! SURF HOUSE ST IVES is bringing a new use to the historic and iconic Battery building, high on the Island, St Ives. With its wide and uninterrupted views across the Atlantic Ocean, it has been many things in its 150 year history. Built in 1860 to house the St Ives Volunteer Artillery Company, it was subsequently used over the years as a military blockhouse, a barracks,
a coastguard look-out, and, during both World Wars, as an Admiralty semaphore and signal station. SURF HOUSE ST IVES aims to promote, advance and celebrate the study, knowledge and understanding of the surf, surfing, surf science, surf culture and history, surf science and everything else to do with surf, surfing and the surf lifestyle. SURF HOUSE ST IVES will house a state of the art digital classroom/presentation suite, where we will run and host a wide programme of educational, vocational and accredited training courses, seminars, workshops, talks and visits by guest speakers. It will also have a comfortable social space, equipped with big screen projection for video analysis and technical coaching, as well as film screenings, yoga sessions, and more informal events. The two spaces can be used separately or together for exhibitions and other public events. SURF HOUSE ST IVES will reflect the internationalism of St Ives and the global surf culture. We aim to have a strong international strand to our work, which will include an exchange programme, and projects with surfing nations throughout the world. Our public programme will include a wide range of projects, events and activities covering all aspects of surf and related subjects, such as oceanography, meteorology, marine ecology and marine conservation. From pretty high end brainy stuff to recreational cloud spotting, wave watching and storm watching sessions we promise something for everybody of all ages!
