In 1952, a young John Milne arrived in St Ives to work with artist Barbara Hepworth. What began as a short exchange soon became two formative years and the start of Milne’s life in the town.

By the mid-1950s, Milne had made St Ives his home, settling at Trewyn House beside Hepworth’s studio with the support of Cosmo Rodewald, his partner in both life and work. Their relationship offers a glimpse into the LGBTQ+ histories woven through the St Ives artistic community.

Milne later turned Trewyn into a welcoming hub for artists, helping shape the town’s spirit of collaboration and exchange—one that drew figures like Francis Bacon.

This photo shows Milne in Trewyn, with a Keith Vaughan painting on the wall behind him, in the 1970s. See work by Milne and Vaughan on display at Tate St Ives.

💭 ‘When memories emerge from the past they do it in fragments, and our imagination of the future operates in a similar way' Petrit Halilaj

Petrit Halilaj grew up in a small village called Runik. When he was 12, he had to flee to safety when his home was attacked during the Kosovo War. Living in a refugee camp, Petrit made drawings to help him process the things he had seen, and to explore his dreams for the future. Petrit describes his work as ‘little nests’ for his history and his imagination to rest together.

Back in Oct 2021 we were delighted at Tate St Ives to present Halilaj's first UK museum solo exhibition.

This animation tells Petrit’s story and offers a glimpse into the colourful worlds he creates in his artworks.

“I didn’t make my first sculpture; it came about.” Rasheed Araeen

Happy birthday to Rasheed Araeen, born on this day in 1935 🎉

Born in Karachi and based in London, Araeen is a pioneering conceptual artist, sculptor, painter, writer and curator whose work bridges art, politics and activism. After graduating in civil engineering in Pakistan, he moved to London in 1964, where he began developing the radical artistic practice he is known for today.

In his essay A Twist of Fate, Araeen reflects on the unexpected moment that led him to sculpture.
