Story Tent at Trestle

After 20 years of Story Tent, this evening is the last time I’ll gather together my props, snip pieces of paper ready for creative fun and load it all in the car…. It seems right to end where I started and tell the first story I ever told in the tent. A story of transformation and change , of endings and new beginnings. “Caterpillar and butterfly”.
It has been an absolute joy to spend time with little people and big people in the tent,weaving magic together with our voices, our imaginations and our hearts… sharing stories old and new, singing together,making together, learning together,playing together.
I have met hundreds of wonderful families , told stories in Nurseries, Children’s centres, Playgroups,Schools, Festivals, Museums,nature reserves and even a bus in the centre of St Albans.
All of this joyous work was made possible by the support and mentorship of Trestle Theatre Company , in particular Laura Halliwell who 20 years ago bought a little gazebo and encouraged me to sit in it! I want to say an enormous thank you to Laura and to Trestle and to every single child, parent,grandparent, nanny and childminder who has joined me in the tent to keep the magic of oral storytelling alive . Thank you x❤️

The Story Tent at Trestle toys will be waiting for playmates at Trestle Arts Base this Wednesday , 10.30 and 1.30. Join us for another term of creative play, imaginative, interactive storytelling and playful crafts.
Now in its 19th year, Story Tent has been enchanting adults and children alike, while nurturing the true foundations of literacy.
The development of speaking and listening and opportunities to hear stories… whole stories ….told or read aloud is the absolute foundation of future literacy. Exposure to rhythm, rhyme, repetition and physical involvement in the story through actions all help to embed understanding of “story language”. But perhaps most importantly, stories enable children to make connections between themselves and others, to explore emotions safely and use their imagination to create the inner world of the story.

And it’s joyful fun!
