It's been lovely being in the company of Ruth Eaton's embroidered creations at EDE Projects | Art Gallery this summer. Every garment is made with natural fabrics and embellished with beautiful, delicate embroideries. And as Eloise can attest from the changing room, wearing them really feels extra special too.

They're all produced in very small quantities so once they're gone, they're gone! AND we're offering discounted prices for our in-person visitors at EDE Projects | Art Gallery in Rye. So if you'd like to try some of these garments on for yourself, do come and visit.

We'll be here at EDE Projects, 4 Cinque Ports Street, in Rye until the 23rd of August. As a general rule, we're open Friday to Sunday, 11am-5pm, with the odd extra weekday here and there. As always, if you are coming a long way to visit then make sure to give us a heads up so we can make sure to be there to welcome you, as we'd love to see you!

Spotlight on Eloise Dethier-Eaton...

In her ongoing body of work entitled Worn, Torn & Mended, Eloise addresses the harmful impact of fast fashion and its wasteful practices on people and planet alike, contrasting this with the restorative potential in caring for our clothing and giving it new life when it’s damaged. These works celebrate the tenderness, resourcefulness and ingenuity found in acts of repair and preservation.

‘Riches to Rags’ portrays the stacked-up bales of clothing that are amassed in textile recycling centres across the world, reflecting the sheer mass of clothing that is thrown away by contemporary consumers at an extraordinary rate, but also the potential that lies in these textiles. ‘Work in Progress’ represents tattered garments showing traces of paint, stains, tears and mending, hanging on a line. The title refers to these garments’ intrinsic association to labour: historically they were all worn by workers and labour was involved in producing and continuously repairing them. And the ‘Salvage’ series represents the unassuming material treasures we cherish, not despite of their wear-and-tear but because of it, thus embodying the Japanese philosophy of Wabi Sabi, which sees beauty in the imperfection and impermanence of objects.

Eloise mainly uses recycled cotton rag paper and her own handmade paper to create these pieces because they fray beautifully on the edges when ripped, much like fabrics do, but also because of the circular processes involved in continually making and remaking these materials.

Spotlight on Anoushka Cole...

There’s a tenderness to the work Anoushka makes in response to the natural environment, whether it’s the delicate act of weaving together found twigs in her ‘Woven Beech’ and ‘Woven Birch’ pieces, or the attention that’s poured into looking deeply at the minute details in the grainy surface of stone in her ‘Ardlamont Stone’ series.

Meanwhile, there’s an intricacy to the deceivingly simple checked works on paper entitled ‘Colour and Place’ and quilted textiles like ‘Shades of Nettle’. These designs, which at first look like plain checks, actually have irregularities which trick the eye, much like Op Art. This compels viewers to look more closely and to appreciate the subtle varieties in colour in the work; paints and dies that Anoushka carefully makes from plants grown in her allotment or foraged from her local environment.

‘Common Threads’ is about telling the cultural and material histories behind textiles. Anoushka Cole makes textiles and works on paper using locally-sourced fibres and dyes. She adopts a minimalist aesthetic which puts her materials front and centre. Eloise Dethier-Eaton makes illusionistic paintings of textiles which have been worn, torn and mended. In doing so, she reflects on the virtues of traditional practices of repair. Whilst these two approaches differ, the common thread in their work is their shared curiosity about how the use of materials impacts our individual and collective wellbeing and environment.

Thank you to for the photos. As a fellow textile artist, and a very talented one at that, it was very fitting and a great pleasure to have you as our first visitor to the show.

In the studio with Eloise Dethier-Eaton...

By using the still life genre, Eloise Dethier-Eaton seeks to tell the stories behind objects. She is particularly drawn to pattern – as surface decoration but also as the motif that connects disparate elements through its repetition – and she enjoys seeing which dialogues emerge when objects or images are placed next to one another in her compositions.

Eloise also draws upon the decorative to reflect on subjects like the environmental challenges we face today. She employs visual means to explore the impacts of our ways on the environment, with topics ranging from plastic pollution to fast fashion.

In the studio with Anoushka Cole...

Anoushka Cole is an artist and maker whose process-based practice is material and location led, often working with resources related to a certain environment. With a background in textiles and material futures, she utilises fibre, colour and printmaking to respond to place. Walking landscapes and learning to read an environment through its resources forms the starting point for her work. She leans into the process of slow making, intuitively learning hands-on skills from the materials she works with. Her research aims to build more resilient making knowledge, regaining a bond to the earth and celebrating our local ecology. This process-driven exploration revisits heritage crafts and shared historical practices. The work is focused on the process more than the outcome, believing that engaging to materials through physical touch invites us to critically examine our environments and the direct impact we have on place.

Spotlight on Berni Cooper...

Berni uses a variety of glazes and oxides in her work. The colour palette is predominantly blues and greens reflecting her love of Korean celadon glazes. She also enjoys adding texture to her work and has recently experimented with some red plum glazes often found in Japanese pottery. Whilst these glazes can be quite temperamental during the making process, there's a masterful, painterly quality to Berni's application of glaze, which marries beautifully with the elegant forms that she adopts in her pottery.

Julia gets inspiration from wilder places where the strong subject matter of eye-stretching geomorphology and ever-changing weather patterns and light effects continue to excite and challenge her. Her talent lies in capturing the raw energy of a place in a way that truly transports the viewer.
