👋Hello, Goodbye ✈️

🎸 Well, we asked for a good turnout to wish bon voyage to Canada Phil and Steve Jukes-Hughes, who are both jetting off this week to far-off lands - Phil for three months and Steve for two. And sure enough, The Roundhouse was packed to the rafters.

Among the seventeen performers were two making their debut - Steve Clarke and Dave Fewtrell; two making their second visit, Adrian Dear and John Harley; and two returning after last visiting us at The Feathers: David Rees and Howard Moysen.

We always love it when new faces turn up at our Singers’ Nights, and we hope some of them will soon become Roundhouse regulars - just like Pete Red and his good lady, who are now on their fifth or sixth visit.

It all made for an absolutely splendid evening, rounded off in perfect style with an impromptu finale from Canada Phil and Steve, performing the very appropriate “Leaving on a Jet Plane.”

📅 I wonder what this Thursday will bring? The Roundhouse doors open at 7.30pm, with the music starting at 8.00pm.

See you there!

🎥 Lockdown Lookback – 17 June 2021 🎬

🗓️ Five years ago this week, we presented our last-but-one Online Virtual Singers’ Night - the 64th show in what had become a remarkable lockdown run.

Live-streamed on YouTube and Facebook, those Thursday nights had become a real highlight of the week - not only for us and our club regulars, but also for the many new musician friends and lovely viewers who gathered around their screens to join in the music, fun and banter.

With the government preparing to update us on the roadmap back to normality, we were beginning to look ahead to the long-awaited return of proper, in-person folk and acoustic nights.
So, to go out in style, we announced that the following week’s show would be a Finale Festival - a fitting way to mark the end of those dark lockdown days.

As always, you can revisit the full three-hour show on our YouTube channel:
https://youtu.be/LLjTXflyP4s

Or, if you’re short on time, dip into our 20-minute highlights reel, featuring songs from Howard Moysen, Brandon Ridley, Harry Robertson, Penni Neale, and Gareth Morris, who treats us to a 10-minute version of Chris Wood’s epic modern folk song, “One in a Million.”

A Perfect Ten at The Roundhouse

🎸 No new faces this week, but ten of our regulars put on a great show for a seventeen-strong audience - which included our friends Alison and John, along with their furry sidekick, Poppy 🐶. Poppy was as good as gold, although she did decline an invitation to perform Offenbach’s Noisy Dog Symphony!
🐾
It was lovely to welcome Geoff Durno back after a few weeks off. He produced a sick note… and some pretty slick notes on his guitar too 😁.

Canada Phil opened the evening with three numbers. He was without his usual partner-in-crime, Maria (she and Kev are away on holiday), so he roped in Tom Degney to add a bit of mandolin sparkle.

And to round off the night in style, Neil Martin, Richard Ruthin, Steve Jukes-Hughes, Tom Degney and Chris teamed up for a lively jam-session finale.

📅 We’re expecting a full house this Thursday (11th June) as we bid bon voyage to Canada Phil, who jets off at the weekend for a three month spell in the country that gives him his nom de plume ✈️. Doors open 7.30pm, with the music starting at 8.00pm.
See you there!

🎥 Lockdown Lookback – 10 June 2021 🎬

🗓️ A nice bit of irony this week: during our club night at The Roundhouse, Steve Jukes-Hughes treated us to a Seasick Steve song on his steel resonator… while five years ago, for our 63rd Online Virtual Singers’ Night, the theme was “Songs of the Sea”. Steve’s weapon of choice back then was his trusty 12-string, delivering Rod Stewart’s anthem “Sailing.”

It was a cracking show, packed with sea shanties, nautical folk songs and maritime ballads, with virtually every contribution fitting the brief in one way or another.

As always, you can revisit the full three-hour show on our YouTube channel:

But if you don’t have time to complete the whole voyage, dip a toe into our 20-minute highlights reel, featuring songs from Tom Goodall, Pete Kirkham, Alex Eddy, and Steve Jukes-Hughes - plus a fabulous version of “The Wellerman” from All Strung Up.

Enjoy the music - and please share!

🎸 Sixteen Performers Rock The Roundhouse

Last Thursday was another cracking night of music at The Roundhouse, with sixteen musicians taking to the floor - including Adrian Dear, who crossed the Clwydian mountains for his first visit to our club. We hope it won’t be his last!

Steve Jukes-Hughes opened the evening on his steel resonator guitar with a set that was dazzling - both musically and in the way it bounced the spotlight around the room 😎

After we’d enjoyed two songs from everyone (and drawn the obligatory raffle), we still managed to squeeze in a bonus round: half a dozen performers returned for one song each, chosen by the trusty random generator. And we finished in fine style with Tom Degney, who rounded off the night with his brilliant “Doctor Jazz” medley.

📅 This Thursday (4th June) marks the official start of summer, so you’ll get a warm welcome at The Roundhouse in more ways than one. Doors open 7.30pm, with the music starting at 8.00pm.

See you there!

🎥 Lockdown Lookback – 3 June 2021 🎬

🗓️ Five years ago this week it was a sunny day, and the future was starting to look a little brighter than it had for the previous sixty-odd weeks. With the end of lockdown finally in sight, our 62nd online Virtual Singers’ Night was packed with uplifting songs — and even featured a stripper!

You can revisit the full three-hour show on YouTube here:

Or dip into this week's 20-minute highlights reel, featuring songs from Andy Connolly, The Eastwoods, Karen & Paul, John Williams, and the much-missed Bob Hall, who sadly died later that year.

Enjoy the music and the sunshine — and please share!

Two New Faces at The Roundhouse

🎸 One of the guiding principles of Ruthin AllStyles has always been to give visiting musicians a warm welcome on our Singers’ Nights - and last week we were delighted to do just that.

John Harley travelled over from Beaumaris to entertain us with his vibrant, distinctive style. It was his first time at our new venue, although he did visit us a few years back at The Feathers.
We also welcomed another first-timer, Phil Thomas from Conwy, who treated us to two fine sets.

Add in the varied and entertaining floor spots from ten of our regulars, and it made for a cracking evening - capped off by a rousing jam-session finale, with Neil Martin joined by around half a dozen familiar faces.

📅 I wonder what this Thursday (28th May) will bring… visiting musicians perhaps? Doors open 7.30pm, with the music starting at 8.00pm.

🎥 Lockdown Lookback – 27 May 2021 🎬

🗓️ Five years ago this week we hosted our 61st online Virtual Singers’ Night, and with Bob Dylan having just turned 80, we set the theme “The Songs of Bob Dylan.”

Most people responded with Dylan classics straight from the master’s own back catalogue, while a few took a slightly different route - choosing songs written by others that Dylan has famously covered across his many albums.

You can sample a selection in this 20-minute highlights reel, featuring Ian Buchanan, Robin the Busker, Penni Neale, and two long-time friends of Ruthin AllStyles — John Kettle (of Merry Hell) and his lovely wife Virginia.

😅 Phew!… Eighteen Performers! 🎵

🎸 Yes — eighteen performers made for another cracking Acoustic Thursday Singers’ Night in front of a comfortably full room at The Roundhouse last week.

We opened in grand style with three numbers from Tom, Dick & Harry. It was lovely to see Harry back in action after a health scare. Sadly, there was no John Bass, who’s still in hospital awaiting surgery, but the trio were joined by Raphael, whose exceptional harmonica playing helped create that full band sound.

Raphael also stepped up for a solo floor spot, treating us to a couple of his distinctive blues numbers on slide guitar.
Another welcome visitor was Wrexham’s Terry Allen, making his first appearance since we changed venue.

Despite the big turnout, we still fitted everything comfortably into the evening because the performers were condensed into fourteen floor spots — including three duos (Sue & Rob, Phil & Maria, and Tom & Lynda) as well as the band.

📅 We look forward to seeing what this Thursday (21st May) brings. Doors open 7.30pm, with the music starting at 8.00pm.
