A few days ago standing at a place I have stood so often to work.

Strands of events unveiling together in time.
The rainbow
The cloud reflecting the setting Sun.
The swans moving past .

These harmonies are all around, we notice when we are still even for a minute they come to us all.

To paint is in away to stand still and soar around a landscape.

There are now five main Atlantic landscape locations I am working in between Argylshire and Orkney. In that similar way to the most distant place where I first painted the locations keep calling me back.
The difference now is each time I revisit this Threshold coast of NW Scotland and journey once again through the five working places ( and a few stops with the van along the way ) the contrast between each one gets more subtle the deeper the journey leads me. Almost as if each place is a different section of music of one continuous whole .

This was the pivot moment from which I placed the Solar Date Mark in the titles of the work .

Made at Knepp after a rain storm that flooded a river I was trying to cross .
A moment of turning and rising into the movement and dance of Nature. A sustained feeling from then onwards …

Painting at Knepp like other wild places means a long walk in with a rucksack .. ( sometimes even more tricky than a Scottish mountain see story ) . Knepp painting feature in current show see profile .
The benefits often at Knepp are surprise encounters … here a majestic cloud framed under a tree I had just painted …and then the wild Exmoor ponies that came to have look and then scatters into the Sunset .
Many recent conversations have confirmed my experience of the drastic fall in bird life over this summer … Many reasons for this .. but one obvious factor is a decline in insect life … If you look carefully in the film clips you can see the swooping of air-born insects that thrive in number at Knepp ..
Congratulations to the team with the piece in the Times today about the impressive Horse Show … I am sure these ponies would agree too !

Descending Light Just in Roseland (Graphite on paper ) 28 x 38cm

A drawing made at St Just in Roseland during the same session of the painting that is featured in the show opening at the end of next week ( see profile ).

Making work standing on the same rock since 1991 , naturally all the pictures and the experience of their making feel connected on one thread. A thread not so tethered to linear time …St Just is a place where many have experienced this loosening ….and maybe not so surprising ….as the standard time we take as a law is not as ancient as the towers where the clocks sit…

It can be nearly impossible to imagine the part of our history that was not charted by universal standard time …But none the less the records show how relatively recent only a small part of society referenced what we now take to be an unquestionable warp and weft of universal time / clock that governs our daily lives .
For example the standardised time we all use dates from 1855 when all British railways conformed to GMT and subsequently so did the town hall clocks etc .
Prior to that there could be a difference of for example 14 minutes between the time in Bridgewater and London .

The use of A 24 hour clock was agreed at an international conference in Washington DC in 1884

St Just in Roseland is a place that touches many people.
In a similar way with other ‘Thin Places ‘ there is a relief felt in that stillness and silence when the habit recedes of trying to define the feeling in words .

In the experience I have had at StJust it is this ‘ pulsing stillness ‘ that I recognise in the work and legacy of Bomberg that lives through the hands of Miles Richmond, Frank Auerbach, Dennis Creffield and many others.

Yes there seems to be a paradox with this stillness when in front of the turbulent surface of the works of these painters but the fact this paradox is present again and again with those whose work in all forms is rooted in Nature that points to an affirming truth .

That vibrant oscillation in the paint that can be seen when visiting the current exhibition of Bomberg Auerbach ( see story ) can almost be heard rather than seen.
A fine short film released today featuring Andrew Graham Dixon is available .

Images St Just in Roseland tidal pool . Like a clock recording the ebb and flood of the Moon .

The water often would rise up boots as tide came in … the suitcase of paints would float its handle tethered to the leg of field easel. ( Even this heavy easel disintegrated when it met the Scottish mountain journeys of recent Threshold working life . See earlier posts .

Featured in the show of work next month will be a few recent paintings made on recent Threshold journeys.
The Threshold body of work that has been building for nearly ten years extends from West Ireland up to the Orkney Islands where I arrived with the van in Spring this year. ( see earlier posts )
