Third attempt, this time for a very special member of my family who likes hummingbirds.

Tried some shading for the background, not super-happy with it, but need to be a bit braver with that. Again, I can see improvement from the second attempt, so that's a win.

I'm happy with the pencils now, and have made myself a chart showing the colors on the PastelMat paper, and indicating the LightFast rating of each colour, in case that becomes important.

Special family member seemed very happy, and giving people joy with my art is a primary aim!

Second attempt, a picture for my wife, who loves African Wild Dogs. Still not mad happy with it, but my wife liked it - she framed it and put it on her office wall!

The shapes and proportions are wrong in my mind, the details not great. But I can see improvement from the first attempt, so that's the main thing at this point.

Using PastelMat paper now, and added some Stabilo CarbOthello and Faber-Castell Pitt's, plus a couple of Caran D'Ache pencils as well.

So, this was my very first attempt. I had a sketch pad and a basic set of Derwent pastel pencils, plus a "how to draw horses" book.

Obviously, first attempt, not amazing! But it did give me the bug.
