If you said 7-10, we'll allow it! ๐Ÿ˜‰

The (technically) correct answer is 10 crows:

๐Ÿฆโ€โฌ› 7 gold-winged crows from our (new) logo
๐Ÿฆโ€โฌ› 2 crows on the blue heritage plaques
๐Ÿฆโ€โฌ› 1 crow carved into the stone insignia

The crow has long been associated with Royston. The bird featured on the town's coat of arms is the Hooded Crow (Corvus cornix), a species once so closely linked to the area that it became known locally as the"Royston Crow". The crow has remained a symbol of the town for generations and continues to be reflected in local organisations, landmarks, and traditions.

August has been another productive month at The Royston Venue as work continues to transform the former Royston Picture Palace into a vibrant, multi-purpose space for cinema, live entertainment, community events and much more.

While much of the activity this month has taken place behind the scenes, significant progress has been made on the technical infrastructure that will support future performances, screenings and events. Alongside this, we've been delighted to continue engaging with the community and hearing your ideas about what you'd like to see at the venue in the years ahead.

๐Ÿšง Behind the scenes progress

One of the biggest milestones this month has been the development of our new Front of House (FOH) booth, which will house the venue's lighting and sound control systems.

Located on the balcony, this dedicated space will provide technicians with improved sightlines and control over performances, film screenings and events. Although audiences may never give it a second thought when enjoying a show, the FOH booth plays a vital role in delivering great experiences and ensuring everything runs smoothly.

Alongside construction work, we have continued testing and familiarising ourselves with the venue's new technical equipment. Our lighting systems have been put through their paces, with different configurations and effects being explored to understand the full flexibility of the installation.

Our Venue Manager, Lydia, has also been spending time learning more about the venue's lighting controls from the FOH position, helping build the knowledge and expertise that will be needed once events begin taking place.

Every week we're uncovering new possibilities for how the venue can be used, and it's exciting to see the project gradually moving from construction and installation towards preparation for live operation.

๐ŸŽญ A venue for everyone

One of the questions we're most frequently asked is simple: "What kind of events will The Royston Venue host?"

The answer remains just as simple: a bit of everything.

This month we've been sharing more about our vision for the venue and the wide variety of activities we hope to support in the future. While cinema remains at the heart of the project, our ambition is to create a space where people can be entertained, inspired, learn new skills, discover local talent, and come together as a community.

That includes film screenings, theatre, comedy, music performances, talks, workshops, creative activities, community events, open mic nights and much more.

The response to these conversations has been fantastic. We've received a wide range of suggestions and ideas, including interest in supporting local artists and creative exhibitions, further demonstrating the appetite for a flexible cultural space within Royston.

Your feedback continues to play an important role in helping shape future programming, and we're grateful to everyone who has taken the time to comment, message us or share their thoughts.

๐Ÿค Building a community of volunteers

This month (today in fact!) also saw the launch of our volunteer recruitment campaign - as The Royston Venue develops, volunteers will play an important role in helping us create a welcoming and vibrant environment for visitors, performers and community groups.

We're delighted by the interest we've already received from people keen to get involved and be part of the venue's next chapter. Whether assisting at events, supporting audiences or helping behind the scenes, volunteers will be a key part of what makes The Royston Venue special.

Community involvement has always been central to our plans, and it's encouraging to see so many people eager to play a role in the future success of the venue.

๐Ÿ‘€ Sharing the vision

We were also pleased to have the opportunity this month to share more about The Royston Venue with a wider audience.

A big thank you goes to Meridian 1 for inviting our Venue Manager, Lydia, onto their radio station to discuss the venue's progress, ongoing renovation work and plans for the future.

Local media plays an important role in helping us keep residents informed and engaged, and we're grateful for the opportunity to talk about the journey so far and the exciting work still to come.

๐Ÿฆโ€โฌ› Shaped by community feedback

One unexpected highlight this month has been the response to our visual identity.

When The Royston Venue was first announced on social media, our original logo was always intended to be a temporary placeholder while the project got underway. However, we were genuinely surprised by how warmly it was received and how quickly people began to associate it with the venue and its future.

Rather than moving away from that initial concept entirely, we decided to build upon it and create something that retained the spirit of the original while better reflecting our long-term vision.

The result is a new logo centred around a crow, a symbol closely associated with Royston and its local heritage. Each coloured section of the crow's wing represents a different part of what The Royston Venue aims to become: cinema, live performance, creativity, learning, and community engagement all coming together under one roof.

While a logo might seem like a small detail compared to the physical transformation taking place inside the building, it represents something important. The Royston Venue is being shaped not only by renovation work and technical improvements, but also by the people who care about it, support it, and are excited to see it succeed.

๐Ÿ™ Thank you for your continued support

As always, we'd like to thank everyone who continues to follow our journey. The enthusiasm and encouragement we've received since launching The Royston Venue has been incredible. Every like, comment, share and message helps us build momentum and spread the word about what we're creating together.

While there's still a great deal of work taking place behind the scenes, each month brings us closer to opening the doors and welcoming audiences back into this much-loved building.

โžก Looking ahead

September promises to be another busy month as technical installations continue and preparations move forward for the venue's future operation.

We'll keep sharing updates, behind-the-scenes glimpses and opportunities for people to get involved as the project develops.

Whether you're interested in cinema, theatre, live music, comedy, workshops, community events or volunteering, we're excited to continue building a venue that offers something for everyone.

If you're a performer, promoter, community group, organisation or potential volunteer interested in working with The Royston Venue, we'd love to hear from you. Lydia, our Venue Manager, can be contacted at: [email protected]
