We managed to attend a couple of these sessions last weekend and came away with a much deeper understanding of the incredible work this charity is doing; not just in central London, but here in Hampshire too.
We loved the concept of “food literacy” and how their work involves teaching alongside the food, rather than simply ‘feeding’. You can see this in the creative ways the school day is reimagined: from moving meals out of the canteen and into the classroom to enjoy together, to growing and picking ingredients from the school allotment and then seeing them appear on the plate. There’s also a real emphasis on introducing new foods and, importantly, listening to the children’s feedback.
It was also incredible to hear how food waste is being rethought. Of course, better-tasting food gets eaten, but in school kitchens, there’s also real creativity when it comes to using every last thing. From onion skins dried and used instead of salt, to (a personal favourite) breakfast muffins made from leftover porridge by 👏
We truly believe this work will help shape the future. Children are not only better nourished, but are growing up with a respect for food, and, importantly, a love for it.
Do check out and the resources available. It’s clear that it only takes a small group of people to make meaningful change.
