Phoenix Players We’re a Brinsworth-based amateur dramatics company which has been running since 1947 and produces 3 shows per season. Membership fees are £30 for the year.

Specialising in comedy and mysteries, you’re guaranteed a great night out at the theatre every time! 🎭🎟️ The Phoenix Players have been producing high quality drama and comedy since 1947 and currently produce three shows each season at Rotherham Civic Theatre. We always welcome new members and rehearse in comfortable surroundings at Brinsworth Pavillion on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. We also offer £20 membership fees to anyone aged 16-21.

This weeks throw back Thursday takes us back to October 1977 to the days of black and white 🤣 and The Dame of Sark a play by William Douglas-Home that dramatizes the true-life experiences of Sybil Hathaway, the feudal ruler of the Channel Island of Sark, during the harsh German occupation of 1940–1945. Based on the Dame of Sark's own autobiography, the story focuses on how Dame Sibyl fought with extraordinary courage, dignity, and diplomacy to protect her isolated community from enemy forces. The entire action of the stage play is set inside the drawing-room of La Seigneurie, the official residence on Sark, tracking the tense daily interactions between the local leadership and the occupying German military?

This was the first appearance with the Players of long standing member Frank Bardsley-let's hope you can spot him ?😀

This weeks throwback Thursday takes us back to April 2005 and Dry Rot by John Chapman
The story follows a quirky group of eccentric bookies who stay at a crumbling country hotel near a racecourse. The hotel is run by a retired colonel, his wife, and their daughter.The bookies hatch a crooked scheme to fix a horse race. They plan to kidnap the favorite racehorse and replace it with a worn-out, decrepit nag. They even hide the stolen horse right in the hotel basement while dealing with secret rooms, sliding panels, and mistaken identity

This weeks throw back Thursday takes us back to January 2013 and Happy Families by John Godber
The plot is a coming of age comedy of John and his odd family
It recounts the stresses and strains of growing up with his family throughout his teenage years. Other characters within the play include Jack and Liz (John's grandparents), Doris and Edna (John's Aunties) and Rebecca (Edna's Daughter). It is a memory play and the narrative jumps back and forth from when John was about 9 until when he graduates with a degree as a drama teacher. John Godber has described it as "humour with a touch of sadness".

Directed by Neil Mather it was great fun to do

This was an odd first for us as the Civic was closed and we performed at RCAT instead

This weeks throw back Thursday takes us back to May 2011 and The Perfect Murder by Hugh Janes based on a short story by Jeffrey Archer The plot centres around an unseen character -
Carla Moorland who has been murdered. John Hoskins, who had been having an affair with her, thinks he knows who did it - himself. John's wife Elizabeth, rather than calling the police, is determined to keep John out of prison, even if it means that an innocent man will be punished for the crime.
However like all good murder mysteries there are some great twists and reveals .
Directed by Julie Webb it was a huge success

This weeks throw back Thursday takes us back to January 2014 and There goes the bride by Ray Cooney and John Chapman
The plot follows an overworked advertising executive who brings home a cardboard cut out of a flapper girl as part of his next campaign.
He hits his head on the morning of his daughter's lavish wedding and begins hallucinating a 1920s flapper girl, sending the family preparations into total disarray.
No one else can see her so it's great fun!
Directed by Tracey it was a huge success

Beckie who played Polly the flapper had to hide on set behind the sofa for the first fifteen minutes of the play ready for her dramatic reveal !
