Press Release from Halpern Charitable Foundation/Nucleus Arts

The Conservancy Building, High Street, Rochester

Following careful consideration, the Trustees of the Halpern Charitable Foundation have taken the decision to place the Conservancy Building on the market for sale once necessary restoration works have been completed.

The Halpern Conservancy Building in Rochester has been closed since a fire in the kitchen on 30 April 2026. The effect has been felt by the many people who use the building: our artists who have studios; our gallery The Halpern Pop and the artists who had exhibitions booked; our digital classroom The Lightbox, the Nucleus Arts staff as well as our tenants Cafe Nucleus and their customers.

Fortunately the Medway Art Box has continued to operate as it is outside the building.

Digital Teen Art and Digital Art are now at Nucleus Arts Centre, Chatham.

Unfortunately our Halpern Conservancy Board Building in Rochester is temporarily closed due to a fire.

Thankfully the fire was contained, no one was hurt and we are currently assessing the impact of smoke on the rest of the building.

We are saddened that our gallery programme in Rochester is currently paused. Our priority is supporting the affected exhibiting artists, studio residents and staff.

Unfortunately we are closed while we assess the damage from a fire in the building overnight.

The gallery is sadly closed today.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

We are fortunate that the fire was contained to the Kitchen area.

Our fire detection devices kicked in at about 4am and it was isolated. We still don’t know what caused it.
