This week’s preparations for the ‘Mother Tongue’ exhibition! We welcome our artists Holly Dawes, Emma Salmon and Lara Hailey as they drench our gallery in a matriarchal, pre-bronze age inspired exploration of language and goddesses. The goddesses are on our side as everything goes smoothly, with the art looking gorgeous and more than traditional!

Thanks to our new work experience student Livia for putting this post together, more to come from her over the next few weeks!

What a wonderful weekend at blackShed during the launch of Clare Whistler and Charlotte Still’s beautiful new book, Watershed. Accompanied by Charlotte’s short film documenting their residency and the remarkable project that unfolded here over the last two years.

Artists, musicians, poets, walkers and members of the community gathered once more to share stories, music, film and readings, moving between the gallery and the pond that so many of us helped to create.

A huge thank you to Charlotte and Clare for their vision and generosity, and to everyone who has been part of the Watershed journey.

The Watershed book is now available from blackShed Gallery, or directly from Clare. If you’d like to hear about the unexpected gatherings that happen here, join our mailing list (link in our Instagram BIO). Not everything makes it onto social media, and some of our smaller events grow through the community that has formed around blackShed. Send us a DM if you’d like to stay connected.

MOTHER TONGUE opens in just over a week!
Join us on Saturday 20th June, 4-6pm to celebrate the exhibition and the summer solstice with music, dancing and art! The event is free and open to all.

Artists Emma Salmon, Lara Hailey and Holly Dawes have been working from an intriguing set of ‘ultra conserved’ words - these are words that have survived and are in use since the last ice age.
Using these words as a jumping off point, they delve into matriarchal history, ritual and meaning-making through a range of materials and techniques.

The exhibition is open from Saturday 20th June until Saturday 18th July, there is also a programme of practical workshops, run by each artist. More details on the Projects Page of the gallery website!

MOTHER TONGUE opens Saturday 20th June with a special Summer Solstice launch event between 4:00 - 6:00pm here at blackShed!
This will include live music, Morris dancing from Ruxley’s Crew and the first look at MOTHER TONGUE - a collaborative exhibition by artists Holly Dawes, Emma Salmon and Lara Hailey.

Thou, I, Not, That, We, To Give, Who, This, What, Man/Male, Ye, Old, Mother, To Hear, Hand, Fire, To Pull, Black, To Flow, Bark, Ashes, To Spit, Worm

These ‘ultra-conserved’ words are a set of 23 identified words that have survived since the last ice age. They have remained largely unchanged for up to 15,000 years, indicating a deep ancestral link between Eurasian language families. These words are powerful and universal, giving clues to their importance in our ancestors lives.

Artists Emma Salmon, Lara Hailey and Holly Dawes explore the theme of matriarchal histories through the ancestry of language in ancient cultures. Working with their independent disciplines of metal, textiles and ceramic, each artist will uncover hidden histories, using the list of ‘ultra-conserved’ words to initiate and unite their practices.

The exhibition opens on Saturday 20th June, and runs until Saturday 18th July.
There is also a series of practical, hands-on workshops to accompany this exhibition - details on the gallery website- book now to avoid disappointment!

The event is free and all are welcome.

FRAME OF THE WEEK | Museum-scale framing

Every now and then a project comes through the workshop that reminds us why clients trust us with their most ambitious work.

These two monumental paintings arrived at blackShed rolled in tubes, each measuring an impressive 2 metres square.

From there, every stage was made in-house. We manufactured bespoke heavy-duty stretchers, jointed and pegged for strength and stability, before stretching the canvases and fitting them into custom-made solid oak tray frames.

The frames were finished in an ebony stain, sealed and polished with beeswax. Unlike painted finishes, a waxed finish develops character over time and can easily be revived with a light buff, ensuring the richness of the timber remains for years to come.

At around 50kg per artwork, most of that weight is actually in the paintings themselves. Moving, handling and installing works of this scale requires specialist knowledge, careful planning and a healthy respect for gravity.

This pair leaves the workshop tomorrow and is another reminder that no matter the size of the project, the principles remain the same: craftsmanship, conservation and attention to detail.

We collect and deliver throughout the UK and are proud to offer these specialist services from our workshop in rural East Sussex.

Last chance to catch A21: Life on the Verge by - an exhibition of paintings, a result of time spent in forgotten places. Nessie has been noticing, documenting and highlighting what often goes unnoticed in our roadside verges.

The exhibition ends this coming Sunday, with special opening hours between 12am until 3pm, so if you’re out about why not pop by, meet the artist and there may even be a bit cake here as well… 👀 🍰

Our usual hours are Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 4pm.

Thank you to everyone who attended our Nessie Ramm / Plantlife walk and talk event on Saturday! It was a really lovely day of walking, noticing, shared discovery and unexpected conversations.

Participants and Plantlife Members walked from Robertsbridge Train Station to the gallery with the keen eyes and expertise of Matt and Cassie from Plantlife and Nessie too - drawing attention to the myriad of wild flowers and grasses that populate that route!
Locally foraged drinks and snacks back at the gallery, made by Joe Hendry (including elderflower cordial, made with elderflowers growing outside the gallery!) were enjoyed after the hot walk! Nettle pesto, homemade sourdough and asparagus purée were among the culinary delights.

Lorna, Nessie and Cassie then spoke about the exhibition, themes within it and the importance of wild plants in creating habitats for wildlife.

Nessie’s exhibition A21: Life on the Verge is on display at blackshed for one more week, don’t miss your chance to explore it for yourself!
