From a block of foam to a monumental statement piece.
This 4m feather sculpture is currently taking shape in the workshop for a major installation. Every line is being hand-carved and refined to create a sense of movement, lightness and flow at a scale rarely seen in nature.
At this stage it’s all about form, rhythm and patience—thousands of decisions that will eventually disappear into a single finished piece.
The journey from concept to completed landmark continues.

A monumental Viking prow carved from aged oak, standing like a forgotten relic from the northern seas. The sweeping spiral and feathered detailing evoke wind, voyage, and the enduring spirit of the longships that once crossed wild oceans beneath storm-filled skies.

Purpose — in progress.

This piece is slowly emerging from hundreds of welded stainless steel fragments, each one placed to follow the flow of the human form.

At this stage the texture is still incomplete, but the structure is beginning to reveal the movement and tension within the figure.

I’m interested in how something fragmented can still carry direction — how strength and intention can emerge through complexity.

More to come as the surface develops.

Behind the scenes of Purpose — where clay, plaster and patience shape something far greater than material.

The studio is thick with dust, the heaters are glowing, and every layer brings the form closer to its final transformation. Nothing refined yet… just process, grit, and belief in what it will become.

PURPOSE" is a 2.5 meter figurative sculpture, currently being created by Hamish and Brenda Herd for a private client in Texas. The work explores strength, intention and the quiet resolve that drives human endeavour.

Rooted in old world sculpting traditions, the piece begins with a hand built armature and is modelled in clay using classical figurative techniques, carefully observing balance, anatomy and gesture. These time honoured methods are then blended with contemporary fabrication processes, allowing the sculpture to transition from tactile clay and steel into its final form.

The completed works will be realised in stainless steel, a material chosen for its permanence, resiliance and subtle dialog with light. In Purpose, traditional craftsmanship and modern engineering meet, reflecting a belief that meaning is forged through both discipline and innovation.

This sculpture stands as a testament to process, collaboration and intention. Where every mark, weld and decision serves a clear and deliberate end.
