There will be work to see and buy, demonstrations to watch and plenty of opportunities to chat to the makers about their processes and the courses they teach here.

On Monday 31 August, Janet Sampson will also be running a Catalan Willow Platter workshop from 11am–1.30pm, with just ONE space left.

And don’t forget our Alley Café, raising funds for Wales Air Ambulance Wales Air Ambulance Charity — come curious, leave inspired, and enjoy something delicious for a good cause.

ALLEY CAFÉ - Our pop-up Alley Café will be back for the Wernog Wood Collective this weekend, serving homemade cakes, savoury snacks, tea and coffee throughout the bank holiday weekend.

As always, the café is run with the help of our brilliant volunteers, with proceeds raising funds for Wales Air Ambulance.

So come hungry, find yourself something delicious, pull up a chair and enjoy a little time at Wernog Wood while you’re here.

MEET THE MAKER
Claire Acworth – Jeweller
Claire Acworth

Claire designs and makes contemporary jewellery in silver and gold. Her work is organic and sculptural, often textured with hammer marks or imprinted with the delicate veins of leaves, and incorporates precious and semi-precious stones alongside found objects such as pebbles and sea glass.

Much of Claire’s work is commission based, including remodelling inherited and unworn jewellery. Using the original gold and stones, she creates distinctive contemporary pieces that retain the history and sentiment of the originals while giving them a completely new life.

Claire is also one of the founders of Wernog Wood, together with her partner Rob Hill, and teaches jewellery here. Her eight-week Tuesday jewellery classes run in both the morning and evening, giving students the opportunity to develop their own projects and skills in a small group. Her next Freestyle Jewellery weekend is on 14–15 November.

Come and meet Claire and enjoy her latest collection of jewellery.

MEET THE MAKER
Lynda Roberts – Mixed Media Artist
Lynda Roberts

Lynda creates richly layered artwork inspired by places, journeys and memories collected over a lifetime of travel.

Combining paint, collage, textured papers and found imagery, her work draws on everything from the intricate architecture of the Alhambra to the landscapes of North Wales, Venice and Nepal. Each piece invites you to look a little closer and discover new details.

Her background in textile design continues to influence her work, resulting in beautifully textured compositions full of colour and atmosphere.

We’re delighted to welcome Lynda back to Wernog Wood this year.

Lynda will be exhibiting on Saturday and Sunday.

Devon stave basket making – 19–20 September

Join basket maker Mike Church for two days learning the traditional skills behind the Devon stave basket – a wonderfully robust West Country design that is now on the Heritage Crafts Red List as a critically endangered skill.

Rather than being woven, these baskets are constructed from individually shaped pieces of wood. You will split, shave and steam-bend the timber to make handles and hoops, shape the individual staves and fit the final ash or willow band.

Mike learnt the tradition through Devon stave-basket maker Mark Snellgrove, who in turn learnt from one of the last traditional makers, Jack Rowsell of Tiverton, using his original jigs and patterns.

By the end of the weekend you will have made your own strong, practical basket – ideal for logs, garden produce or general lugging-about – while learning the skills behind a very special heritage craft.
