Etching like Goya. Saturday 27th - Sunday 28th September 2025

A weekend etching workshop using less toxic materials with printmaker Mai Osawa.

Goya used to create line work using copper plate and a process called etching which involves drawing on a plate with a range of tools. This would have helped him manipulate the width and depth of lines and create images with greater elements of fantasy and satirical observation. English writer and philosopher Aldous Huxley described Goya thus; 'No other artist in black and white has ever exhibited such tremendous vitality, such seething indignation and wealth of invention as Goya... [His] prints for this series have placed him next to Rembrandt as one of the two greatest etchers of all time.’

Local artist and etcher, Mai Osawa, will be running the Etching workshop from Reigate Studio. In two days you will learn how to prepare and work with your own image and etch and print a copper plate with a beautiful etching press using a process and materials that are much less-toxic and more environmentally friendly than would have been available to Goya when he was etching!

The course is suitable for all, from absolute beginners to experienced artists

Introduction to Dry Point etching with Mai Osawa. Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th October 10-4pm at Adam's Gallery
£65.00 for the day.
Drypoint is the simplest intaglio process, using a sharp metal point called a drypoint needle. With this tool, you scratch the line directly on to a metallic material or simply a sheet of plastic. By doing this you create on both sides of the line a ridge known as the burr which holds a quantity of ink, which then prints as a rich feathery smudge.
At this one-day workshop, we will use A6 and A5 size plates (plastic and drypoint paper) and so do bring some sketches and ideas if you would like. All materials are provided but do bring apron or cloth that you don’t mind getting inky, and a pack of lunch to keep us going!

Life drawing back in Reigate

Saturday Morning life drawing classes are back at Reigate Art Studios.
August 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th.

Suitable for all levels of skill, there will be a model but no tutor so you are welcome to either draw or paint.
We will have various poses ranging from very short warm up poses to a more sustained pose over the 3 hours.
Drawing materials are not supplied except drawing boards so please bring your choice of pencils, charcoal and paper.
I will have paper and charcoal available to buy if you don’t have any.
