Enjoyed our current exhibition Reading Then & Now?

This Saturday author and photographer Jim Donahue will be presenting aspects of his new book, The Thames Valley: Past, Present and Future – A Snapshot of English Life.

Book Now: https://rdguk.info/Talk__Thames_Valley__Past__Present_and_Future_Ij18d

Making use of his photos, maps and other illustrations, the talk will focus on some of the early history of the Thames Valley that is all around us but not generally well known, such as evidence of prehistoric life and early settlements in the area, the significance of the Goring Gap, and the likely locations of King Alfred’s battles with the Vikings in the Reading area.

As Reading Central Library is closed in preparation for its move to Bridge Street, we look back at its history. This is the official opening ceremony of the first library, held in the Town Hall, with the organ in the background, Wednesday 9th February, 1883.

Excitement is building with just over two weeks to go until the new library opens on Thursday 18th June. We are very much looking forward to welcoming everyone!

It's National Biscuit Day!

Why not head down to Didcot Railway Centre to celebrate with us? Trains delivered H&P biscuit tins around the country and brought visitors to Reading. Just like this excursion party to Huntley & Palmers in 1934.

You've got until Sunday to apply for this exciting role with us at the Reading Museum, part of our Roman project supported by the National The National Lottery Heritage Fund Good luck!

♥️ Do you have the skills, experience and enthusiasm to reinterpret and enhance the visitor experience of Reading Museum’s Roman Gallery, connecting a wider range of people to Reading’s Roman heritage?

📆 This is an exciting opportunity to join Reading Museum’s major heritage project, Roman Britain Reimagined in Reading, which will transform the current Roman Silchester Gallery into a vibrant new Calleva Gallery opening in early 2028.

💼 Working as Collection Interpretation Officer, you’ll help shape how visitors experience and engage with the story of Calleva — the important Roman town at Silchester — using the latest archaeological research from the University of Reading.

The new gallery will:
🏺 Redisplay nationally significant collections in exciting and accessible ways
🏺 Share new discoveries from 30 years of excavations
🏺 Explore stories of Iron Age and Roman Calleva, including diet, trade, religion and everyday life
🏺 Highlight the cultural and ethnic diversity of Calleva and its parallels with modern-day Reading
🏺 Support community engagement activities and schools’ programmes

We’re looking for someone who can:
✔ Create engaging, inclusive and audience-focused interpretation
✔ Bring complex historical and archaeological stories to life
✔ Work collaboratively with museum colleagues, academics, schools and communities
✔ Develop interpretation that connects with diverse audiences
✔ Help deliver a transformative visitor experience

This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to a high-profile cultural project that will reshape how Reading’s Roman heritage is understood and shared for future generations.

This summer’s Reading loves reading challenge is about to take off.

New, fun activities are coming to your local library with opportunities to earn certificates and win prizes.

Primary school aged children are challenged to visit their library three times and read six books between 23 May – 12 September. Teens and adults can join in the Book Bingo game.

This year’s Reading loves reading challenge has a space theme and is being launched at the borough’s six local libraries this Saturday, followed by lots of fun half-term activities.

Children can help decorate rockets, take part in a colouring competition, create their own alien or design and build their own moving rocket picture.

You’ll also be able to join in the fun at the new Reading Central Library in the Civic Centre when it opens from 18 June.

is also looking for volunteers aged 14-18 to encourage children to take part in Reading loves reading.

'Old Cottages, Caversham' by Faith Ashford (1884-1967). This is possibly the view from the artist’s home on Matlock Road, Caversham where she lived with Anne Pritchard.

In the 1920s-1930s Faith Ashford was a lecturer at the University of Reading’s School of Art, teaching handicrafts. Following retirement she retrained as a painter. Faith was a founder member of the Reading Guild of Artists.

Faith was teaching when University of Reading was granted its Royal Charter in 1926, 100 years ago.
