Virtual Voices

Virtual Voices The church choir of Waltham St Lawrence and our singing friends, joining together to make music virtually, both for fun and for use in online services.

A hymn Virtual Voices recorded in lockdown and published on YouTube, “Christ whose glory fills the skies”, has been consistently popular and used in various online broadcasts. The latest request to use it (not necessary but nice to ask) comes from an Australian radio producer for their Songs of Faith programme. So VV has finally gone around the world 😅. Cloudscapes taken in the parish by Stuart Scott (of Shurlock Row) are used in the video.

Our very own (if she will allow that) Sarah Seymour is being interviewed on Rhidian Jones’ music and talk programme on Marlow FM 97.5 on Thursday 14th Apr at 10am.

You can see details of the station and schedule here: https://www.marlowfm.co.uk/programmes/good-morning-marlow/. For non-locals, it is possible to listen live online, or to get it on catch-up later – details are on the website.

Rhidian interviews local people on the Marlow radio station about their interests and achievements, playing a selection of their music. He himself is a very fine organist and director of music at All Saints’ Marlow, succeeding Sarah’s husband Martin, and Sarah herself directed the music at St Margaret’s Harpsden.

As well as singing alto on VV’s albums (and at WSL in person) Sarah is an accomplished artist and created the beautiful images for our first album and CD cover.

Sarah has flatteringly selected VV's recent recording of the Tallis Lamentations as one of her music choices, which will be played in its entirety in the programme (unlike Desert Island Disks, which only plays excerpts). It is a very relevant choice as the Lamentations form part of the traditional liturgy for Maundy Thursday.

I hope many of you will be able to (metaphorically) tune your wireless to 97.5 MHz on Thursday at 10am and hear more about Sarah and her many accomplishments!

Good luck Sarah!

As WSL church will allow singing in church from Sunday, our online services have come to a conclusion - for now - and for the first week in quite a while we have no hymns or anthem to prepare and mix!
But Virtual Voices continues, firstly with a live Choral Evensong in Waltham St Lawrence church on Sunday evening 1st Aug at 6pm, with the same music that we will be singing at Guildford Cathedral on 14th August (at 5pm). We are supported by singers from St Michael's Sunninghill, where VV organist Camilla Jarnot is now director... to all of whom we extend a very warm welcome.
We are also recording the Byrd Mass for Five voices, which will feature on a second CD to be available in the autumn, also containing some Christmas music we deliberately omitted from "Their sound is gone out".
Send us a message for more info about Virtual Voices in future, or watch this space...

Today's anthem for the online service was White's simple and delightful setting of the well known words attributed to St Richard of Chichester from the 12th century.

Leonard White's easy and popular setting of the prayer by C12 St Richard of Chichester.
