As part of our commitment to creating a more regenerative practice, we are taking steps to make sure that the work we produce as artists has a direct and positive impact on the environment around us. That is why we are very excited to showcase Steve’s new print collection, starting with the release of ‘The Sound of Silence’, a limited-edition print from which 20% of the sale will be donated to the RSPB via Work for Good, to fund their extensive work to save the fragile state of our birdlife and habitats.

Steve’s new low-carbon and sustainably hosted website is now live, where you can find out more about this beautiful artwork; www.stephenmelton.co.uk/prints

If you visit Ramsgate or Margate beach at the beginning of August from low tide, you may see an unusually large windbreak, rising above others. Look more closely and you will see it displays the life-sized predictions of sea-level rise for the area over the next 100 years. Walking along its length you see the years pass by, and the rising sea that will eventually cover the beach completely, sometime after 2070.

This work has been made in response to discussions with our local community exploring what they love about Thanet's environment, and what climate change means to them. Everyone we spoke to loved their beaches and beautiful coastline. Although many are aware of sea-level rise, fewer people knew how it would affect our local landscape.

UNHEARD VOICES FOR EARTH
--
In May 2023, we went out and interviewed 100 people within Thanet with 3 simple questions:
1) What do you love about Thanet’s natural environment?
2) Have you noticed any changes within that environment?
3) What does climate change mean you?

The collective responses have been fascinating, and have provided a real sense that locally, people love their coastline, they want to protect it, but fundamentally, they are worried about what’s to come.

The QR codes that have been engraved onto these flints, link to an individual voice, sharing their responses to our questions. There are 100 flints on Ramsgate beach, and 100 flints at Margate, and will remain there indefinitely. You can also find the full archive, along with further information about the project, at https://www.unheardvoicesfor.earth
--
These voices are the beginnings of an archive. They are speaking from a time when our decisions and actions for the future, carry an unprecedented importance for humanity and our planet. They capture this moment, where we find ourselves on the brink of global disaster or regeneration.

This project has been made possible by and , with a special thanks to for their help (and patience) in engraving the flints.

Hello Everyone!

We have 10 FREE places available on our 'How Do You Get to Net Zero?' Carbon Literacy Course.

We have been developing our complex Net Zero strategy for a few years. We have industrial equipment on site, so we definitely contribute to local climate change with emissions from our energy use.

When we started to address this, we really didn't know where to start; we had no idea if it was possible, what did Net Zero even mean, and would the changes we could make have impact, or be worth it?

This course, delivered by the Climate Literacy Project aims to demystify Net Zero, and takes you through simple steps to achieve Carbon Literacy. You will have knowledge and tools to apply to your own practice and organisation, and you will also be accredited by this UN recognised course.

Please join us if you can - we will be prioritising artists and creative organisations of any kind, in Ramsgate and Thanet before we offer it more widely.

Booking via our website, in the booking form at the bottom of the page. Booking closes on Monday 27th March.

Moving on from Meltdowns

Since we begun in 2004, we have been a hub of activity and achievements. In 2014, as we continued to get busier, we realised that it was, perhaps, time to reflect and take stock with what we were actually doing. We wanted to ensure that we grew into a new and more honest version of ourselves in a strategic way, rather than being reactive to what arrived at our studio doors.Meltdowns was conceived by artists Stephen Melton and Sarah Craske, who wanted to create a small community of artists through the provision of workshop space and casting facilities. It was called ‘Meltdowns’, as that was Stephen’s nickname when running the foundry department at, what was at the time, Kent Institute of Art and Design. We took the name with us, which has served us well for many years.Since then we have created and cast 1000’s of artworks for artists across the UK and beyond. Whilst doing this, we were also adapting to technological and material innovation. We naturally grew from bronze casting, to cast in other materials and then eventually to create artworks using, and sometimes combining, many methodologies, materials and expertise.By 2014 we had grown from just the 2 of us to 6 members of full-time staff (and an ever-increasing list of part-time freelance staff), at which point we then received a grant from our local authority. The SUCCESS grant greatly enabled us to develop the company towards an ecologically sustainable future. It also allowed us to focus on art, science, technology and innovation, which included adapting to 3D digital technologies. It also included a feasibility study on expansion, an extensive staff training program, an extra team member and a business overhaul, which has ultimately led to the birth of SPACER.

This is SPACER

Over the past 3 years, we’ve been reflecting on the great potential and opportunities that multidisciplinary activity can bring. We had acknowledged that the world is starting to accept that collaborative thinking and communication is becoming more of a demand than a practice. We have developed and are now implementing our new ‘business model’. It reflects what’s important to us as artists (and as an artistic community), whilst working alongside (and for) other artists, designers, universities, scientists et al.We will continue to enjoy casting work for many and providing studio space, but we will also demonstrate the extent of our artistic practice through the many other activities that also happen in our studios. Soon, we will be launching our education and residency program, opening our workshop up for others to use, and will continue working on our expansion plans. Every week we will now be uploading more content here, and on our new website, so do please continue to get in contact for fine art fabrication and casting expertise. We hope you will appreciate and enjoy the further opportunities that we will be offering very shortly.
