ROUND THE HORNE

Pyrford Little Theatre presents our NEXT extravaganza - "ROUND THE HORNE"! Yes - the 1960s radio show with Kenneth Williams and others. Hilarious, silly and charmingly dated.

Come to our mock up of the BBC Radio Theatre for an evening of fun, laughter, risque chat and daft songs. Learn a little "Polari" language from Sandy and Jules, some country wisdom from J Peasemould Gruntfuttock, experience brief encounters between Fiona and Charles, and much, much more.....

Directed by our own Mike Ashworth, we will be casting shortly - info will appear on this page, and tickets will be on sale in the next couple of days. Performing Friday 28th & Saturday 29th August, 7.45pm. Doors open from 7.15pm, where you can enjoy our licenced bar offering beer, wine, tea, coffee and light snacks.

Join us for a good laugh!

Our Sheriff of Nottingham, after being kicked out of Sherwood by King Richard, seems to have wound up on the Island of Utopia. Otherwise known as Steve, he appears to think he's some sort of Opera singer now as he's appearing in Gilbert & Sullivan's Utopia, Limited. It should be worth checking out to see what he makes of it! Don't boo him though - apparently that doesn't sit well with Opera audiences!

INTRODUCING OUR CAST: MR. GOLDBURY & LORD DRAMALEIGH

Today is the turn of two of our "Flowers of Progress", the Company Promoter Mr. Goldbury and the Lord Chamberlain Lord Dramaleigh. Arriving on Utopia with Princess Zara and the rest of the Flowers of Progress, they proceed to turn Utopia upside-down as they assist the King in making a "Britain across the waves". It is Goldbury who has the central idea of turning the entire island of Utopia into a limited liability company. And Dramaleigh who teaches the King the "proper" way of doing things, although he does confuse the Court of St. James' with the Court of St. James' Music Hall, so there's rather more razzmatazz! Both Goldbury and Dramaleigh catch the eyes of the King's younger daughters, the Princesses Nekaya and Kalyba. Romance could be on the cards, if only they can get away from Lady Sophy!

Mr. Goldbury is played by the wonderful Matt Excell in his principal debut for GOS. He joined us for the chorus for Yeomen of the Guard at the Buxton festival last year, but is a veteran G&S performer so we are thrilled to have him as part of the crew. Lord Dramaleigh is played by the legend that is Steve Dorsett. This is Steve's debut with GOS, but he's well known from other performances in the area. A relative newcomer to G&S, he's better known for singing in rock, musical theatre, pop styles etc. But he's making the transition nicely, we'll make an Opera singer out of him yet!

This is a rare opportunity to see UTOPIA, LIMITED - the 13th show written by Gilbert & Sullivan. Performed by the Godalming Operatic Society, winners of the NODA South East "Best Savoy Opera" award for the last two years! Tickets are selling incredibly well - nearly all our performances are in the LIMITED or VERY LIMITED availability range. One show is already SOLD OUT. We are performing at Godalming Borough Hall from the 18th to the 21st and The Leatherhead Theatre on the 27th and 28th. Tickets for Godalming are well over 85% sold and there is approx. 40% availability left for Leatherhead. Do not miss out on the chance to witness this wonderful show performed by one of the leading Gilbert & Sullivan groups in the country, accompanied by a 25 piece professional orchestra. Tickets can be purchased at godalmingoperatic.org/tickets

ROBIN HOOD: MORE REVIEWS & TICKET UPDATES

Well we're 2 shows down with 3 to go. And we have had 2 amazing audiences so far.... thank you for your warmth, support and wonderful words as seen below. As for TODAY's shows - the Matinee is now SOLD OUT, and at time of writing there are 18 seats remaining for the Evening performance. There is still GOOD availability for TOMORROW's Matinee performance so if you haven't got a ticket yet and do want to come along, that might be a good option. Tickets are available at pyrfordlittletheatre.org.uk/boxoffice

We have received a full length review from our Thursday production which we will share with you below. It's quite a long read but we felt it worth sharing. Full credit to Melanie McCabe for the review....

"Pyrford Little Theatre’s hilariously enjoyable performance of Robin Hood last night began in traditional panto fashion with a rhyming fairy introduction. Claire Turner was beautifully clear spoken as the Forest Fairy, in a charming green leafy costume with iridescent green wings. She segued between scenes with polish and professionalism.

"We soon met our hero Robin, played by an excitingly buff Dan Ash. He instantly won our hearts with a nice mixture of cheek and chivalry. His Merry Men evinced bonhomie with a good dose of chaos, though some of their introductions could have been clearer in order not to lose the jokes inherent in their various names. Elise Hollinshead sparkled as Will Scarlett, with great characterisation and commitment, and a special mention should go to Don Juan (Sheldon Marriott) who fast became an audience favourite through channeling his inner Antonio Banderas. Mike Ashworth too deserves praise for stepping in as Little John with only a day’s notice, and barely using his script!

"The costumes were cleverly colour coordinated, with the outlaws displaying a whole (Sherwood) forest of green shades, and those from Nottingham standing out in tones of red, while a suitably evil black and grey palette denoted the baddies. The exception of course, resplendent in a series of wonderful dresses and brightly coloured wigs, was the adorable Nurse Nelly Noshmore, played with pathos by Steve Fitton, who instantly had the audience on ‘her’ side, with her constant efforts to get someone, anyone, to eat her pie. Her ‘Made you look’ number was a real winner, and Steve’s evident enjoyment lit up all our faces even more than his neon pink wig.

"Sarah Needham’s Maid Marian was very pretty in a floaty red costume, giving plenty of sass but exhibiting a most believable crush on Robin. The chemistry from both sides was wonderful, and had us wondering if Robin really needed to enter that archery competition to win a kiss from our heroine. Her singing voice was on the quiet side but still enjoyable, and she evinced a wonderful disgust at the thought of marrying the Sheriff.

"Steve Dorsett elevated the whole production as the deliciously horrible Sheriff, his confidence and flair with ad lib showing the audience as usual that they were in good hands. Charlie Wynne amazingly had only 30 minutes notice of Eveey Ruth being unable to go on, but his Guy of Gisborne was nevertheless beautifully delivered in an understated and sardonic manner that was very effective, and his singing was impressive enough that one would not have guessed he had never rehearsed the show! His two henchmen (Sue Rolph and Sue Dingley) were subtly hilarious, and several audience members declared them favourites.

"Some of the cast spoke a little softly, which led to some jokes being missed by some at the back of the audience. This was a shame, because the writing was splendid, including some traditional jokes but also a great many which I had never heard before, and all hilarious. Some wonderful sound effects brought the super scenery to life, no effort was spared with the props which included proper tankards and musical instruments for the Merry Men to abuse, and some small lighting cue delays were more than made up for with fantastic visual projections. The ‘green screen’ arrow shot was widely held the funniest part of the show, and spoke to some wonderful writing and direction which culminated in a show that, laughing at itself, brought us all in on the joke. Thank you all for a very enjoyable evening indeed." ‎
