"Pyrford Little Theatre’s hilariously enjoyable performance of Robin Hood last night began in traditional panto fashion with a rhyming fairy introduction. Claire Turner was beautifully clear spoken as the Forest Fairy, in a charming green leafy costume with iridescent green wings. She segued between scenes with polish and professionalism.
"We soon met our hero Robin, played by an excitingly buff Dan Ash. He instantly won our hearts with a nice mixture of cheek and chivalry. His Merry Men evinced bonhomie with a good dose of chaos, though some of their introductions could have been clearer in order not to lose the jokes inherent in their various names. Elise Hollinshead sparkled as Will Scarlett, with great characterisation and commitment, and a special mention should go to Don Juan (Sheldon Marriott) who fast became an audience favourite through channeling his inner Antonio Banderas. Mike Ashworth too deserves praise for stepping in as Little John with only a day’s notice, and barely using his script!
"The costumes were cleverly colour coordinated, with the outlaws displaying a whole (Sherwood) forest of green shades, and those from Nottingham standing out in tones of red, while a suitably evil black and grey palette denoted the baddies. The exception of course, resplendent in a series of wonderful dresses and brightly coloured wigs, was the adorable Nurse Nelly Noshmore, played with pathos by Steve Fitton, who instantly had the audience on ‘her’ side, with her constant efforts to get someone, anyone, to eat her pie. Her ‘Made you look’ number was a real winner, and Steve’s evident enjoyment lit up all our faces even more than his neon pink wig.
"Sarah Needham’s Maid Marian was very pretty in a floaty red costume, giving plenty of sass but exhibiting a most believable crush on Robin. The chemistry from both sides was wonderful, and had us wondering if Robin really needed to enter that archery competition to win a kiss from our heroine. Her singing voice was on the quiet side but still enjoyable, and she evinced a wonderful disgust at the thought of marrying the Sheriff.
"Steve Dorsett elevated the whole production as the deliciously horrible Sheriff, his confidence and flair with ad lib showing the audience as usual that they were in good hands. Charlie Wynne amazingly had only 30 minutes notice of Eveey Ruth being unable to go on, but his Guy of Gisborne was nevertheless beautifully delivered in an understated and sardonic manner that was very effective, and his singing was impressive enough that one would not have guessed he had never rehearsed the show! His two henchmen (Sue Rolph and Sue Dingley) were subtly hilarious, and several audience members declared them favourites.
"Some of the cast spoke a little softly, which led to some jokes being missed by some at the back of the audience. This was a shame, because the writing was splendid, including some traditional jokes but also a great many which I had never heard before, and all hilarious. Some wonderful sound effects brought the super scenery to life, no effort was spared with the props which included proper tankards and musical instruments for the Merry Men to abuse, and some small lighting cue delays were more than made up for with fantastic visual projections. The ‘green screen’ arrow shot was widely held the funniest part of the show, and spoke to some wonderful writing and direction which culminated in a show that, laughing at itself, brought us all in on the joke. Thank you all for a very enjoyable evening indeed."
