Restore and learn a new skill. This course is designed to be a practical creative experience, encouraging a thoughtful approach to working with materials whilst building confidence in upholstery skills.

Why does handmade matter?

Sheep and yarns from Diana’s flock at Chilton Grounds Farm and Charlotte’s .

From fleece to yarn.

From the flock in the fields, season to season, through all weathers, shearing and processing, to spinning and dying the wool into beautiful soft yarns.
There is so much care, time and skill behind a simple ball of wool. You can see it in the natural colours, feel it in the softness and get to know the stories of where it began.

For us, handmade is about connection — to the land, the animals, the makers and the materials.

Roots, Rhythms & Rituals
“Roots, Rhythms & Rituals” celebrates the traditions that ground us, the creative energy that moves us, and the shared practices that bring us together. It invites everyone not just to observe culture, but to take part — to share stories, join in music and making, and contribute their own voice.

This theme recognises culture as something lived and experienced: expressed through everyday rituals, collective celebrations, and creative acts passed from one generation to the next. Together, we honour our roots, move to new rhythms, and create meaningful rituals for the future.

Roots, Rhythms & Rituals ~ A Celebration of Heritage Textile Making at Black Swans Studio.

Join us for a community textile festival as we explore the traditions of weaving, lacemaking, spinning and stitching.

Inspired by the rhythms of the seasons and the stories held within handmade cloths, this is an opportunity to slow down, learn traditional skills and contribute to collaborative textile artworks.

It’s amazing what can happen when everyday materials are looked at a little differently.

Fabric scraps, ribbons, old T-shirts, plastic bags, paper, string—things that might otherwise be thrown away can become part of a woven piece with its own story.

We’ll have a selection of materials to experiment with at our workshop, you’re welcome to add your own if you’d like.

Creative activities have a lovely way of bringing people together.

There’s no right or wrong way to weave, and no experience needed. Just time to slow down, make something by hand, and enjoy being part of a shared creative space.

There’s something satisfying about making something with your hands.

This Thursday we’ll be spending some time weaving with recycled and repurposed materials, exploring colour, texture, and simple creative techniques together.

Whether you come for the making, the conversation, or simply to try something new, you’ll be very welcome.

♻️ Feel free to bring along a few clean recycled materials if you have some, or just come as you are.
