A rare glimpse into the beginnings of my career 🎨

I painted this in 1999, right at the beginning of my professional journey.

Long before the New York cityscapes and urban paintings, I was experimenting with pure abstraction - colour, texture, movement and instinct.

Looking back at these early works now, I can see so many elements that eventually became part of the way I paint today.

The flashes of yellow and red, the gestural marks, the layers and atmosphere - it’s almost like seeing the DNA of my later work.

Very few paintings from this early abstract period come onto the market, which makes this one particularly special.

🎨 A CREATIVE ESCAPE

I’ve started a new series called Creative Escapes - a chance to step away from the studio, discover beautiful and inspiring places, and share some of the things that feed my creativity as an artist.

In this episode, I’m exploring a hidden collection of Lancashire art - discovering paintings, stories and a little piece of our artistic heritage right here in the North West.

I love the idea that creativity doesn’t just happen in front of a canvas. Sometimes you need to get out, explore, look at things differently and simply escape for a while.

This is something a little different from me, and I’d really love to know what you think.

This colourful & energetic artwork is from an intense body of gestural abstract work that formed the very foundations of her output as a professional artist. One of Angela Wakefield’s earliest abstract landscapes, this expressive work captures the raw energy and emotion that would later become a defining characteristic of her artistic practice. Rather than depicting a recognisable place, the painting evokes the atmosphere and sensation of the landscape through powerful colour, texture and gesture.

Influenced by the expressive traditions of artists such as Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Franz Kline, Francis Bacon and Frank Auerbach, Angela explores the landscape as an emotional experience rather than a literal view. Layers of deep charcoal black are punctuated by vivid crimson and luminous yellow-green, creating a dramatic tension between darkness and light. Vigorous brushwork, scraping and textured surfaces give the composition a palpable sense of movement, vitality and strength.

I really enjoyed visiting The Croft & Hangar at Stydd Gardens in Ribchester. A lovely place that’s well worth a visit.
