Late 50s and early 60s – the golden era for British music and fashion.

Rhythm & Blues was embraced by mods and beatniks and thrived in small, influential clubs across London and the North, helping shape an underground scene that spread nationwide and still influences club culture today.

Shake Yer Hips, named after Slim Harpo’s 1966 release, started before lockdown and has taken place in Darwen, Preston, Whalley, Blackburn and beyond.

Preston had its own cool 60s/70s venues including the Stax Club, Castle Vernon bowling alley and Booths Café.

Shake Yer Hips aims to recreate the spirit of those legendary clubs, bringing together Rhythm & Blues, Ska, Bluebeat and 60s soul from labels like Stax, Atlantic and Motown in one afternoon.

We didn’t understand it as it is understood now. When you are in the midst of it, when it happens organically, you don’t actually notice it. Hip-Hop, Jazz Funk, Disco, Electro, Soul, etc., it was just what we did. New, or morphed sounds, got introduced slowly, organically, as it had always done. Later, what was then termed as House, was just another sound introduced into the midst of all the other sounds we danced to.

Sett End, Hacienda, Blackburn raves, private parties, Park Hall on a Thursday, Sunday sessions at places like Game Bird amongst many other places, none differentiated. We listened to old skool classic Funk tracks like Lyn Collins “Think”, new stuff like NWA’s “Express Yourself”, alongside Nightmares on Wax electronic fuelled “Dextrous”, and Ce Ce Rogers soulful “Someday”. It was just a vibe, not a genre.

House music was a continuation of a culture…. A love for Black music. A love for dancing.

It’s not easy to make money off culture. It’s not a tangible product. So, it becomes packaged. Defined. Specialised.

Acid House. Funky House. Deep House. Afro House. Soulful House. Minimal House. Tech House. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Nah. It’s just House. It’s either quality or not.

Playing at Sweet Sounds gives that freedom to play quality. Don’t worry about the labels. What does it sound like? Does it move you? Cool. Then it’s quality, and that’s all we are interested in. Take it back to its culture of people coming together for a few hours in unity. Getting out of your house. Leaving your worries at the door. Moving your body, releasing those endorphins, serotonin and dopamine.

It doesn’t need defining. DJ’s don’t need to be shackled to a label. People don’t need to come with any expectation apart from having a good time. Freedom for all. Good times for all. That is what Sweet Sound is. Rebuilding the culture of the dancefloor.
