For our final Portsoy Rocks post this week we wanted to share our Geology tour with you! This forms part of our Chamber 3 display at the Museum.

Did you know a Pictish 7th - 8th century artefact was found by Mr. J.T. Crowden M.D. in Portsoy? Sometimes referred to as the Portsoy Whetstone, it is made from a hard black stone, phyllite, and forms an irregular cylinder 5-6 inches in length. The stone is engraved on both sides, a fish on one side and a complex arrangement on the other with two faces at either end chins facing inward with a fish, a cross, a crescent and horseshoe symbols lay in between the faces.

Residing in the British museum since 1921, it was last exhibited in Aberdeen in 2015. We hope to be able to display the Portsoy Whetstone in our museum one day.

Well, now we have a logo, we really need some merch to help spread the word!! Modelled by some of our fabulous volunteers, these organic cotton T-shirts are available in denim blue or fuchsia pink. We have a range of adult and child sizes available.

One of the things we love most at the Bothy is working with wonderful people who give their time and skills so enthusiastically! We want to thank artist David Lloyd for creating this logo and our unique font!

The Geology Wall outside the Bothy showcases the rocks found in the Portsoy area, an area of significant geological interest.

To celebrate our special area we decided to launch “Portsoy Rocks!” Every day this coming week we will share a little Portsoy Rocks gem with you!

Today’s brilliant offering is this film, very kindly written and presented by Rob Butler from The University of Aberdeen.

This volunteers_week, we’re saying THANK YOU to the incredible people who give their time, knowledge and enthusiasm to support the Portsoy Salmon Bothy Museum.

Our volunteers are at the heart of the museum. From welcoming visitors and sharing stories of Portsoy’s rich fishing heritage to helping preserve local history for future generations, their contribution is invaluable. Without them, this unique museum simply couldn’t operate as it does today.

Volunteering at the Bothy is about more than giving your time. It’s an opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills, connect with your community, and play a part in keeping Portsoy’s fascinating history alive.

Whether you have a few hours to spare each week or simply a passion for local heritage, we’d love to hear from you.
