🏅 Congratulations to Dylan Gover, writer of our seventh selected script of 2026, July’s ‘The House of Shadows’.

🗣️ Dylan says: “I started writing for Crowbait for the first time last year - I had two of my scripts selected and put on in this year's Showbait, and it was great to see what an amazing job the director and actors did with my scripts. The House of Shadows is so different to things I have written before, and I am looking forward to seeing all the hard work put into this script in next year’s Showbait”

📝 Looking for a fresh writing idea? We’ve picked a prompt at random from the weird and wonderful suggestions of our August attendees - for Tuesday 1 September 2026, we’d love to see scripts on the theme of ‘Rain at Last’.

⏱️ We’ll be reading up to nine scripts, each no longer than eight minutes and selected at random from those submitted. The group’s favourite will be invited to our 2027 Showbait showcase.

📑 Remember: the prompt is just a suggestion, so feel free to bring plays on any theme.

📅 Join us at The Nut Bar, downstairs at Keppel's Head Hotel, The Hard, on Tuesday 1 September 2026 at 7.30pm. It’s a suggested donation of £2, and we accept cash and contactless payments at the door.

🏅 Well done to Benji Bebbington, writer of our sixth selected script of 2026, June’s ‘The Fall’.

🗣️ Benji says: “The Fall opens up the door to hidden secrets and although it is not based on real life, watching it played felt very real, and brought a tear to my eyes. I think there were more tears when I heard it had been selected, very happy but so shocked. Until about 5 months ago I hadn't even thought about doing anything like this.”

✍️ Fancy tackling a new prompt? Randomly selected from our July attendees’ ideas, the suggested prompt for Tuesday 4 August 2026 is: ‘What’s Wrong With My Eyes’.

⏱️ We’ll be reading up to nine scripts, each with a maximum length of eight minutes, and the audience favourite will go on to our 2027 showcase, Showbait.

📑 Just to note: the prompt is entirely optional — plays on any theme are welcome.

SHOWBAIT 2026 opens tomorrow night at Portsmouth Guildhall Lens Studio at 7:30pm followed by a matinee Sunday at 1:30pm.

Featuring the selected scripts from 2025, Showbait celebrates local playwrights and local actors. What better year to celebrate Portsmouth!

We have scripts by Rhys Chant, Nutty Techy, Elliot Sergejew, Joan Horton, Dylan S Gover, Jacquie Penrose, Sophie Nickerson and Raj Khan.

Our actors include Emily Williams, Christopher Daniel Fox, Anna Louise Leng, Izzy Tarrant, Jordan Journeaux-Brown, Dr Suzanne Marie Taylor, Ross Wood, Alec Sleigh, Vincent Adams and Raj Khan.

Led by director Bradley Barlow and Stage Manager Jessica Jones, we promise that this is one you won’t want to miss!

It's Crowbait UK’s annual showcase of ten new short plays written by talented local writers, and this year, we’re bringing a diverse selection of stories to The Lens at Portsmouth Guildhall.

From hilarious comedies to dark dramas and touching tragedies, there’s something for everyone in these two shows of brand new theatre performed by local and professional performers.
