Life isn’t always perfect at the Happy studio! Shani’s art teacher at the used to say: ‘Make 10 pieces, 5 will have issues, 2 will be ok, 2 will be good and 1 will be fully successful’. We remember this every time we open the kiln and it helps us be happy with our achievements even when, like all ceramists, we have to say goodbye to pieces we have made with so much love.

In the reel Anaïck is in the Happy studio holding a shallow round bowl, the side of an extra large dinner plate, featuring a sculpture of a hare swimming in a blue grey sea towards the pebbles of Chesil beach.

Second stop in our gorgeous expedition today. It was an absolute joy to meet in his home studio and discover his intensely engaged and moving work. It is very humbling to meet the brave people of our world.

The short reel shows Shani gently investigating the sculpted portrait of a black African young woman. In this particular portrait the artist has chosen a realistic smooth finish for the portrait and another sculpture nearby show a completely different finish for the portrait of an old friend.

We wish we could visit every single artist highlighted by a Postit… but Shani’s pain levels would go to the roof and she’d have to spend weeks recovering. So, tomorrow we’ll try to visit 3 or 4 studios starting with the wonderful .sculptor up in Beaminster as we cannot wait to discover his marble portraits sculptues! Then we will make our way back down to Bridport where there are many ceramists and sculptors. and
are all on our wish list and we will see where the wind gets us. Unfortunately not enough time to push on to West Bay. 😞

Make sure you visit all your extraordinary friends, neighbours, colleagues and acquaintances who are opening their studios on the island and all over Dorset for the next two weeks. We are planning our first Dorset Art Weeks expedition on Saturday to visit 5 or 6 studios from Chard to Bridport and we will visit Portland artists during the week. We absolutely recommend it!!
