🔉Shani can usually sit on her orthopaedic chair in the Happy studio for around 1 hour and a half before her back pains become truly unbearable; the start of this session made things even more complicated as she is creating the sides of the moon which are quite a bit higher than the table and will also induce some shoulder pains. Shani’s positive attitude to all that the universe throws at her is to find a less painful way to still enjoy her hobby, challenge her imagination and progress in her skills. Today, all her spoons where spent up, so, instead of going back to the moon base, while the top part dries up and hardens up, she started a different, small, more physically manageable and, crucially, needing a lot less concentration. It is one of her most loved sculptures to create. Can you guess what it is? 😊

I’m stuck for colour inspiration, help please!
What colour is the floor?
This year’s Christmas baubles are not all christmasy,
This one isn’t at all, it’s quite easy to see.
The title is pretty, it’s got a good story,
‘Modern Interior With Cat’, with plant loving p***y.

A tale of house trained, island surfing feline,
Cheerfully rearranging manicured succulents out of line,
Wrap around, ergonomic and minimalist
Perfect playground for mousers and anarchists.

Artistically tabby, velvety with blue eyes dots
Whiskered pandemonium in his serene decor
I know the kitchen top and the trio of pots
What I am pondering now, is what colour is the floor?
The set of pictures show different details of the baubles described in the poem.
It was invented at Poundbury garden centre while the Happy creations were on show with, amongst others, a beautiful painting by Sarah Jayne Jefferies which inspired the whole scene. Sarah’s painting is vibrant, crisp and modernly happy and I cannot work out how to finish our bauble decoration to make it justice.

Learning how to sculpt dogs, one session at a time and, this time, with the help of tiny elderly mini Yorkshire Terrier Bibi.
It is so lovely to be able to share another lovely Happy studio moment with you all.

The reel shows Shani sat at the studio’s bench and Anaïck places a very small dog (who has just woken up from her siesta and is unusually still and quiet) on the table in front of Shani. Shani puts her hands on the dog’s back and legs to find out how different the shape is from her cats. Together they think through the differences and how Shani will be able to include them in her next dog sculpture.

Second session on the little labrador. Shani sculpted her last week and she was waiting patiently in the wet box. This gave the clay a chance to dry a bit and get to the leather hard stage. Anaick gave her a luxurious coat of tiny scratches and sat her on her bauble. Then we wondered what she would be up to…. There was a little gap under her front paws, but what could she be holding there? We thought for a moment and then…

The reel starts with the sculpture of the sat up labrador Shani had sculpted last week. The captions say: ´Remember this little girl’ and ‘She’s got a bauble now’. Then a view shows the finished bauble which has been stamped with a delicately detailed leaf, the little dog has been given eyes and small scratches all over its coat to emulate her hair. She looks delighted and has a Christmas cracker under her front paws and two more crackers are tumbling down the side of the bauble. The captions say: ‘She’s a little cracker’ and ´She just needed a little fluff’.

I run the Happy Studio, everything in it is my call. Over the last 11 years, it has filled up with all the wonderful glazes and underglazes needed to create earthenware ceramics, because that is the clay Shani preferred the feel of when we visited CTM Potters Supplies a decade ago. Then, we went on a course to learn how to sculpt full size portraits Le Créatoire and when we tried to do our homework, realised that earthenware wouldn’t work. So I bought my first bags of stoneware clay and only bisque fired it until a few weeks ago. For those who don’t know, it is a huge step (and a whole load of possible trouble) to run both clays in the same studio and I was truly petrified to do it. It took a beautiful card designed by Vicky Yorke last summer to inspire me to make my tiny bottles and then, a whole year later, the wonderful meeting with Antonia, who attends my weekly clay club, and has given me the last little bit of courage to go for it. I love it so much that each of these gorgeous women supported me on my journey in their own way and I am so chuffed with my first glaze tests results! Thank you ladies!!! (And Gregory too of course, since it is all his fault in the first place!)
