I remember it well

One of the most surreal stories in British entertainment happened at the 1996 BRIT Awards.

Michael Jackson was performing Earth Song in a dramatic stage show that ended with him surrounded by children in what many saw as a Christ-like presentation. Jarvis Cocker, the frontman of Pulp, strongly objected to the performance. He ran onto the stage, danced around, lifted his shirt and pointed his backside towards Jackson before being escorted away by security. Cocker later said it was a protest against what he saw as the performance’s self-important, messianic imagery.

Things became even stranger afterwards. Cocker was arrested and questioned over allegations that children on stage had been assaulted during the incident. Bob Mortimer, who had previously worked as a solicitor before becoming a comedian, stepped in to help represent him during the legal process.

After police reviewed the evidence, Cocker was released without charge and no criminal proceedings were brought against him.

30 years on, it’s still one of the most talked-about moments in BRIT Awards history, and the fact that Bob Mortimer unexpectedly became part of the story somehow makes it even more memorable.
