✨There's more to the this exhibition than meets the eye.

At first glance, May Morris is often associated with pattern and design, but her work reveals so much more. She was a master of embroidery and design.

This exhibition brings together so many beautiful details from embroidery, water colour, jewellery and more, from one of the key figures of the Arts & Crafts movement.

Now open, for you to explore.

Behind the stage curtain, an artist was busy at work.

Laura Knight, was known for her atmospheric paintings of the theatre, ballet and circus. Her fascination with dance began early in her career and she was later granted permission to study the dancers of the Diaghilev Ballet backstage when they were in London.

This painting, Ballet, was first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1936, the same year Knight became one of the first women to become a full member of the Academy.

We know her name from the gallery, but here's something that might surprise you, Lady Lever was not Lady Leverhulme. 😯

She was born as Elizabeth Hulme in Bolton and she grew up practically a neighbour from her future husband, William Lever. She went on to travel the world and crossed the Atlantic fourteen times and was among the first women elected as a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

After her death, Lord Lever combined their surnames - Lever and Hulme - to create the title Leverhulme and named the Lady Lever Art Gallery in her memory.

Find out more in this fascinating feature written by Gavin Hunter, honorary archivist and historian to the Leverhulme family.

These rare paintings have survived for more than 600 years 👀

Dating from the early 1400s; the panels, telling the story of Saint Ursula and her 11,000 Virgins, are among the few works of their kind in the UK.

See them on display in the Gallery and catch a behind the scenes glimpse of how our Lead Conservator, David Crombie, is helping to preserve these extraordinary works for future generations, in this short video on our website.

🍇Did you know one of the Wirral's most famous ladies is hiding in plain sight right here in our Gallery?

Born on the Wirral, Lady Emma Hamilton became one of the most celebrated women in Europe, captivating artists, aristocrats and royalty alike.

In this striking portrait by Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, Emma is depicted as a Bacchante, a follower of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and revelry.

The painting captures the theatrical flair and charisma that made her so popular during her own lifetime.
