Tideline - Mosaic & Felt Creations

Tideline - Mosaic & Felt Creations Mosaic and felt creations, inspired by sea & shore, created on the Island of Islay. Much of my Time exploring Islay has been from a kayak, bike or walk.

I create mosaics made from vintage china, found items including sea glass and pottery gathered along Islay’s shores, and mosaic tiles. Whilst mosaic's have become the main part of my work I also make felt pictures. These are created through a wet felt process using merino wool and various threads and silks for embellishment, inspired by the colours of Islay through all seasons and weathers. This

has had a big impact on my use of colour and my love of including skerries in my felt pictures and blue iridescent tiles in my mosaics, inspired in particular by the beautiful South East coast of Islay. My work is a mixture of commissions and items that I make to sell in local shops on Islay and in my Isle20 shop. I can make mosaics for all sorts of occasions and events, personalising them to individual needs, these do take time however so it's always good to have plenty of notice especially for larger items.

Another recently completed mosaic that I can now share as it has arrived at its new home. The request was for a butterfly in pinks/purples and mauves to reflect the flowers and planting where it will be sited. Crazy paving style stained glass tiles form the background. It’s on slate, my favourite substrate for outside use 🦋

Recently completed Luing bull Mosaic commission. I have to admit this one gave me the fear, I really wasn't sure that I could bring alive this stunning bull as it just seemed to be mainly reddish brown and I was concerned I wouldn't be able to define its shape and the textures of its fur. With a bit of artistic licence I brought a little more creamy colour to his forehead using lovely vintage china and a selection of tesserae to achieve it. Hand cut slices of stained glass mixed in with tesserae helped to define the rolls of skin around his neck creating some shape and definition there too. The flying geese and sea in the background along with the yellow flag iris set the scene of a Hebridean seascape where this beastie is often found. It was originally bred on the Isle of Luing in the 40's when the Cadzow brothers crossed Shorthorns with Highlands and developed the breed. This commission was a retirement gift following lengthy service with the RSPB. What a fitting tribute, and lovely to be trusted with creating this piecescotland

I have had an incredible couple of years that has involved all sorts of exciting events both personally and professionally. On the creative side of things this has included taking part in an artists residency with , delivering many workshops with all age groups both bespoke and with schools and community groups, completing several commissions whilst also making a few pieces to sell locally and putting on an exhibition with fellow Hope Spot artists. Personally I have spent a lot of time having all sorts of adventures both near and far with friends and family culminating in the most incredible trip to South America earlier this year. More recently we’ve welcomed a new pup ‘Pip’ in to our family who needs lots of time atm. I’ve realised that as a result of this hectic time I’ve not been developing lots of ideas I have in my head for new work and feel it’s now time to prioritise this for a while. So as a result I’m pausing on taking any new commissions whilst I focus on some new work and updating my mosaic kits. Existing arrangements for commissions are in progress. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the past couple of fabulous years. It’s more than I could ever have dreamed of 🙏🏼💗 Bespoke workshops continue to be available. Just get in touch if you’d like to arrange a session for friends and family.

On Thursday I had the opportunity to deliver a workshop focusing on Flapper Skates with and at the Ocean Explorer Centre just outside Oban. The morning started with a super interesting talk by Jane Dodds of who told us all about the research and science that is going in to developing a better understanding of this critically endangered species. It was absolutely fascinating. It was then time to start the creative part of the session, creating flapper skates in mosaic over looked by a life size model of a flapper skate 👀 they are huge!!! It was wonderful to see how each person created an entirely different mosaic thinking about how to incorporate the skates entirely unique spot patterns. The combination of art and science felt really good, I came away having learnt so much and enthused to know more. Here’s to more collaborations 😀 it definitely feels like the way forward.
