Do you ever feel like you’re not quite capturing what you’re hearing in the room? 🎤

Sometimes it’s not about more level, it’s just about picking up what’s already there.

That’s where something like the DM-1S comes in, great for those smaller details that can easily get lost ✨

Sometimes one mic does the job. Other times, two give you the balance you’re looking for 🎸

Using DELTA 2 alongside HALO lets you capture both the body and the bite of an amp, without relying too much on processing later.

Do you find yourself blending mics, or keeping it to one? 🧐

We were delighted to welcome Alene Lautenschlager, our current Sontronics Scholarship winner for Abbey Road Institute London, to our facility in Poole recently 🎤

During her visit, Alene spent time with our production team learning more about how our microphones are made, and even had the chance to hand-build one of our DM-1B microphones herself.

We think it’s important that people starting out in the industry get the opportunity to see how the tools they use are actually made. Hand-building our microphones allows us to maintain consistency and attention to detail, and it was a pleasure to share part of that process with someone at the beginning of their professional journey.

Thank you for the help Alene!

We were pleased to be involved in the Music Producers Guild - MPG event 'Inside the Take on Live Tracking' at the Wi******er Audio Barn yesterday.

It was fascinating hearing the different approaches engineers take when recording musicians performing together live, and how much of the final result comes down to decisions made at the source, mic choice, placement and the way musicians interact in the room all play a big part in shaping the recording.

Thank you to the MPG for hosting such an engaging session, and to everyone who joined us on the day.

Great conversations and a really enjoyable event!

Multi-pattern microphones have been a studio staple for decades, and for good reason. Switching between cardioid, omni and figure-of-eight covers most recording situations comfortably.

A continuously sweepable polar pattern, like on the MERCURY, takes that flexibility a step further. Instead of jumping between fixed positions, you can fine-tune the pickup pattern gradually, which gives you more precise control over how a source interacts with the room.

It’s not about better or worse. It’s about precision when you need it, and how you want it.

How a microphone listens is just as important as what it hears. The polar pattern doesn’t just control direction, it shapes how much room, space and low end become part of the recording.

With MERCURY, you’re not locked into fixed positions. The pattern is fully sweepable, so you can gradually adjust the response to suit the room and the source in front of you. Sometimes cardioid feels too tight, omni too open, and the sweet spot sits somewhere in between.

Being able to dial that in by ear changes the way you work. It becomes less about choosing a preset and more about shaping the balance until it feels right.

Do you tend to stick to one pattern, or adjust depending on the space?
