There have been many big-displacement AMGs over the years, but these are the most special.

AMG is synonymous with big V8 engines and smoking tires, having produced some of the best sounding, most hooliganistic performance cars the world has known. But before establishing itself as a semi-standalone performance division responsible for the development of current Mercedes-AMG models, AMG was once an independent tuning house that dabbled with a range of vehicles, even including Hondas in their repertoire.

Founded by 2 ex-Mercedes engineers – men by the name of (A)ufrecht and (M)elcher, the former hailing from (G)roßaspach – it was always Mercedes-Benz that the tuner would specialize in; and the two brands have collaborated on some truly special models throughout the years. Though there are many big-displacement AMGs that have won our hearts over the years, we decided to pick just 10 that we thought were the most special. So here they are, in order of age, up to 2016..

How about the 1954-1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gull-wing Coupe?

The 300 SL was introduced in 1954 as the first iteration of the SL-Class (Sport Light), it was the fastest production car in its time. The distinctive gull-wing doors and beautiful design make it a timeless classic and coveted collectors car. It was the world’s first production fuel-injected model supplying a 3.0L overhead cam straight-6 to produce 215 hp and a top speed of 260 km/h. Very impressive stats in the 1950s. Mercedes’ popular SL sport coupe is still in production with various sub-models.

Classic Mercedes-Benz: 1970 C111

No list of classic Mercedes-Benz cars would be complete without this one: the 1970 C111. The first edition of the C111 debuted at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in 1969, but the real stunner is the second edition that was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show the following year.

The experimental car did everything right: spectacular body design, innovative materials, pioneering technology and, last but far from least, top-level performance.

The fiberglass body shell and four-rotor engine accelerated the Mercedes-Benz C 111 from a standing start to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and gave a top speed of 300 km/h.
