Tattoo commission for a good friend

The Afanc originates from Welsh mythology, it is said to be a demon that resides in lakes. It's appearance varies depending on the text you read, it has features of a crocodile, beaver and water based reptiles.

This is just a sketch but I'd love to do a more detailed illustration at some point. This is a personal commission, and it's not to be reproduced. Drop me an email if you'd like to commission a design 🦇

Witchy Commission

This was my first time carving and drilling bone. For the carving I used traditional techniques by hand carving the deer jaw and using charcoal to emphasise the design. I took inspiration from designs found on Celtic shields.

Blodeuwedd yn yr Eisteddfod

Blodeuwedd will be on display at the National Eisteddfod. It is the largest cultural event in Europe, celebrating all things Welsh.

She will be in the Coleg y Cymoedd tent, amongst other student work.

The Eisteddfod is from August 3rd - 10th, in Ynysangharad Park

I just want to say thank you to everyone who's supported my work, and came to the Foundation Art and Design, Nantgarw exhibtion. It was really cool to see everyone's art on display. Blodeuwedd will be on display from Monday - Thursday 9am-4pm, at Coleg y Cymoedd Nantgarw (E block).

Next I'll be going on to study animation at University West of England :)

Blodeuwedd (44cm Tall Marionette)

Blodeuwedd’s story has always interested me. She was crafted from meadowsweet and oak by two wizards, to be the wife of Lleu Llaw Gyffes but she was later punished for her infidelity by being transformed into an owl. The Mabinogion portrays her as a villain, I wanted to offer a new perspective on her story through the art of puppetry. From a modern feminist perspective, Blodeuwedd’s sole purpose was to exist for the pleasure of a man. I wanted to challenge this by portraying her as a Goddess-like character, representing freedom.

I constructed Blodeuwedd out of natural materials to honour the close connection between the Earth and mythology. I carved Blodeuwedd’s head and body from limewood, using a combination of power carving and hand carving. Her costume is made up of repurposed fabric, with her dress imitating a bronze age dress. For her hair and owl wings, I needle felted them and followed the anatomy of real owl wings. The finer details such as the flowers in her hair are real dried flowers, and I made her jewelry out of fine wire. I intend for my work to offer a modern perspective on folklore and to demonstrate how versatile natural materials are.

Mari Lwyd (rod puppet, 38cm tall)

Mari Lwyd is believed to be a Waissaling tradition, although the true origins aren't known. The Mari Llwyd is traditionally a horse skull on a stick carried by a man concealed with a white sheet. The Mari Llwyd is accompanied by a group of men and they visit local houses and request entry through song. Both sides would sing at each other until one gave up. If the householders relented they would provide entry, food and alcohol to the Mari Lwyd.

Mari Lwyd was my first puppet and I made her for a recycled material brief. She's entirely made out of recycled and organic materials (apart from her hands and hooves). She took me four weeks to make, I hand carved her skull out of wood. I'm currently doing some repairs on her and making her a box 🐴
