The National Marine Aquarium (NMA) is the UK’s largest aquarium, located in Britain’s Ocean City, Plymouth. It is run by the Ocean Conservation Trust, a charity dedicated to connecting people with the Ocean.

You probably won't be able to spot this fish at our Aquarium, but that's for a very special reason.

Meet the yellowbanded possum wrasse, a tiny, peaceful, and highly secretive marine fish found on Indo-Pacific coral reefs. These fish grow to a maximum length of around 8 cm, which is about the same size as a matchbox.

Our possum wrasse plays a very important role in our coral lab as pest control. Our biologists work hard to grow coral fragments for our displays, and this little fish helps keep the coral happy and healthy by eating parasites. Unlike many fish species, possum wrasses have the unique ability to swim backwards. This helps them navigate the tight spaces between coral.

It might be tricky to spot our possum wrasse, but if you take a look in our coral lab on your next visit with us, you may be able to spot him swimming around!

Join us for The Big Help Out! 🧤🌍

Want to make a difference in your local community? Join the Eden Project Project and us on the 7th June for a community litter pick around Plymouth's waterfront!

Together, we'll be helping to keep our local environment clean by litter picking around Teat's Hill Park, Teat's Hill Beach, and the surrounding area. Every piece of litter collected helps protect wildlife and prevents waste from reaching the Ocean.

After the litter pick, we'll head back to the Aquarium at around 12:30pm for some well-earned biscuits and hot drinks ☕🍪

Whether you're a seasoned beach cleaner or joining your first litter pick, we'd love to see you there!

It's Volunteers Week!
We are so grateful to all of the incredible people who give their time to the Ocean Conservation Trust.

Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. At the National Marine Aquarium, they share their passion for the Ocean with everyone who walks through our doors. They also help care for our animals, dive into our exhibits, and bring the Ocean to life for our guests every day.
Beyond the aquarium, our volunteers are out in the field with us, getting their hands dirty restoring seagrass meadows as part of our Blue Meadows project, helping us reverse decades of habitat loss one plant at a time.

To every single one of our volunteers: thank you. We couldn't do it without you. 💙
