This week, Hannah Scott will be presenting work created during her month-long, self-directed residency at KARST 🦴✨

During her time at KARST, Hannah has been considering the body as a divine form evolved from stardust, asking a question: can our progress and technology really copy such profound sophistication?

Hannah says: “During my residency, I’ve been developing a wall-mounted sculpture, a constellation made from sheep vertebrae. When deciding on the background, I knew I wanted to use blue rather than black. As Van Gogh said: blue is the colour of infinity. He used it as an emotional and spiritual tool to evoke the vastness of the universe, eternity, and the divine. Driving past sheep every day, and thinking of their bones returning to the ground after they die, made me consider permanence. If an ambition of the sculptor is to create something transcendent that outlives its maker, these sheep are doing a remarkable job.”

RELIC 4
Larry Achiampong
16 Oct – 12 Dec 2026

This autumn, Larry Achiampong will present his new film Relic 4 (2026) at KARST, revisiting the cinematic universe of the Relic Traveller project after a six-year hiatus. Exploring themes of fallen empire, class, and displacement, this ongoing film series interrogates the architectures and residues of colonialism. Achiampong poses fundamental questions such as: what and who is shaping history? And whose traces are deemed worthy of preservation?

The Relic Traveller series is set in an alternate reality where the Pan African Union uses time-travel technology to retrieve testimonies from people collectively oppressed by colonisation, capitalism, and globalisation. The films follow various ‘Voyagers’ across desolate landscapes as they gather these voices of communal memory.

Relic 4 is supported by the British Council.

Take a sneak peek at the two amazing objects from The Box Plymouth’s natural history collection in KARST’s current exhibition, Lucía Pizzani’s Faunal Succession. 🦣

In Faunal Succession, Lucía encourages us to consider the billions of years of history that make up our local environment. While preparing for the exhibition, she had the opportunity to explore The Box’s archive and select artifacts to be shown alongside her work. At the back of the gallery you can find a display case, housing two woolly mammoth teeth and an enormous coco de mer nut.

The mammoth teeth are approximately 40,000 years old and were found in the local area. These sub fossils provide a rare view into the dramatic changes in climate and ecosystem that Plymouth has seen, connecting us to a very different moment in time when mammoths, rhinoceros and wolves would have roamed South Devon.

The coco de mer is one of the world’s biggest seeds and it has a beautiful, almost bodily appearance. Originally from the Seychelles Islands, they are a product of Island Giantism, an evolutionary phenomenon that makes them much larger than their mainland counterparts.

Last chance to catch Rachael Allain’s test space! 🌊

Rachael is presenting work developed during a month-long, self-directed residency at KARST. During this time, she made work in response to the shifting light experienced in and around the Summer Solstice.

Each week, Rachael has made camera-less photographic blueprints, both inside the studio and by the sea at Tranquillity Bay. These works act as analogue recordings of the light levels and are ingrained with trace elements of their surroundings. As a result, each print is unique to the meteorological conditions it encountered. Alongside this practice, Rachael has kept chalkboards and handwritten diaries of light – noting daylight hours, lunar cycles, tide times, shifting weather conditions, temperatures of the air and water, light phenomena and ephemera.

When you next visit KARST, don’t forget to greet Sentinel, our new Doorway Guardian! 👋

Doorway Guardians is a year-long collaborative project between KARST, Matt’s Gallery and Flatland Projects, comprising a series of three large woodcarvings by Annie Whiles. The sculptures (Attendant, Minder and Sentinel) combine the imagery of British seaside destinations with the material and methods of painted medieval carvings.

Throughout 2026, different Guardians will simultaneously occupy entrance spaces at Matt’s Gallery in London, Flatland Projects in Bexhill on Sea and KARST in Plymouth. They will be rotated and exchanged, setting up an evolving series of encounters for visitors at all three venues.

We encourage visitors to the gallery to touch and interact with the Doorway Guardians.

📅 Sentinel will be at KARST until 1 August. Doorway Guardians will be on show throughout 2026 at KARST, Matt’s Gallery and Flatland Projects.

In Faunal Succession, Pizzani presents three environments that merge installation, sculpture, painting and sound. She reimagines the British coast through a ‘deep time’ lens, considering Earth’s history on an immense timescale spanning billions of years. For Pizzani, this physical manifestation of ‘deep time’ becomes a framework for rethinking contemporary human and ecological crises, revealing borders and national identities as constructed and recent concepts.

STUDIO NEWS

In July, Hannah Scott will be joining us as a short-term studio holder, undertaking a month-long, self-directed residency.

Hannah recently completed an MA in Sculpture at the Royal College of Art, having previously studied at Chelsea College of Art. She was shortlisted for the COLAB Yorkshire Sculpture RCA prize in 2025 and received the Fine Arts Prize at the Ilminster Open in 2024. Hannah is interested in the human body as an exploration of profundity, drawing specifically on consciousness, evolution, and the continuums that exist after embodiment ends.

Hannah says:
“My month at KARST will be spent creating a 3.5-meter wall-mounted sculpture (working title 'Carbon Copy'). Using highly evolved, elegantly curved Vertebrae, and contrasting these shapes against a measured industrial metal grid. The whole piece should end up being 18.5 percent carbon, like the human body.”
