Term begins tonight!

7pm – 8:45pm at Plymouth Unitarian Church, Notte St.

There’s lots of exciting things happening at Plymouth Community Choir this term. We’re performing at The Gansey Gathering Sardine Festival on the 20th June (organised by The Conscious Sisters) and writing our first songs together during our free Song-weaving Workshops.

We’re delving deep into fishy folk songs, knitting ditties and protest songs from the English Civil War in preparation for the Festival during the first half of term. Then after the festival we’ll be relaxing with some new gems and old favourites before our Summer Social on the 10th August.

If you like singing, fish and/or knitting, get in touch for a free taster session!

We're hooked already! 🐟🐠⛵️

Plymouth's very first Gansey Gathering Sardine Festival has been announced for Saturday 20 June at Cattewater Harbour!

Yes you heard it - Plymouth is hosting its very first Gansey Gathering Sardine Festival to celebrate Plymouth's coastal heritage and the traditional Gansey fishing jumper. The event is part of a new, exciting four-part project funded by a grant of £64,490 from Arts Council England delivered by The Conscious Sister CIC.

Inspired by the Janner Gansey—the traditional, hand-knitted fisherman’s jumper—and the story of the sardines that once sustained the city under siege from the Royalists, the sardine festival will honour Plymouth’s maritime past.

The Conscious Sisters CIC hopes to see one hundred local people wearing Janner ganseys on the day.

Entertainment will include shanty groups The Seagals and Seaweed in the Fruit Locker, alongside hands-on coastal crafts such as crab pot making and fish skin leatherwork. There will also be storytelling and story walks for those who want to find out more about our fishing heritage.

Running from 11am to 4pm, the festival is free and open to all so spread the word and celebrate with us in June.

Just to clarify Gansey are neither thick, heavy or scratchy - they are tightly knitted with fine needles and fine but dense wool -making them dense but not heavy- so that fishermen could move about easily while working..

The Gansey Gathering Sardine Festival 2026: FREE Acapella Songweaving Workshops!

Saturday 25th April & Saturday 9th May, 2pm - 5pm @ Plymouth Unitarian Church, Notte St.

We are very excited to be partnering with TThe Conscious Sisters this term for The Gansey Gathering Sardine Festival on the 20th June!

Yes you heard it - Plymouth is hosting its very first Gansey Gathering Sardine Festival to celebrate Plymouth's coastal heritage and the traditional Gansey fishing jumper. The event is part of a new, exciting four-part project funded by a grant of £64,490 from Arts Council England.

Inspired by the Janner Gansey—the traditional, hand-knitted fisherman’s jumper—and the story of the sardines that once sustained the city under siege from the Royalists, the sardine festival will honour Plymouth’s maritime past.

We will be singing a mix of traditional fishing songs, knitting ditties, rebel anthems from the English Civil War and some brand new compositions created during our community Song Weaving Workshops.

If you'd like to join us in creating some material for the event and learn some new skils, come along! We'll be playing with circle singing, creative writing and collaborative vocal improvisation techniques to weave spontaneous songs in 3 & 4 part harmony, drawing on the wider themes of the festival. You don't need to be able to read or write music to take part - just a willingness to sing, experiment, take risks and collaborate!

The sessions are free and open to all. You can attend either or both sessions, but places are limited so booking is essential.

To book you place, click the link in the comments below.

Unfortunately tonight’s session is cancelled - Daisy managed to dodge all the viruses circulating in the run-up to Christmas, but the flu has finally caught up with her! 🤧😷🤒

We’ll be back next week.

We'd like to say a massive thank you to the amazing Daisy Mai Higman and her Plymouth Community Choir. Their xmas concert raised over £250 for Tulgey Woods Sanctuary CIC. The concert was beautiful and we're looking forward to further collaborations with Daisy and her Choir in 2026.

We'd also like to thank Katty Bray for donating her photography fee from the concert to us as well, it's greatly appreciated.

Keep an eye on our website for community singing sessions in the woods, coming very soon.....
