Creative Roots A group of like minded creatives Creative Roots is formed of a group of like minded creatives from across Plymouth.

Painting for the Random Art Corner in Union Street, the bridge in Garfield Terrace and auctioning our artwork to raise funds for Leadworks are just a few of the projects we have worked on. Our goal is to help the local community by being present at Leadworks and supporting local artists to express themselves through art. To build an appreciation for art and create a safe place for people to come together and express themselves through creativity.

🍄✨ The only magic happening in art group today was… TOADSTOOLS! 🧙‍♀️🍄 We were clearly feeling enchanted! 😂

We welcomed Darcy to the group today, who left us a little task to complete another week for her university dissertation. No pressure, everyone… it’s perfect for us! 😂📝🎨

And it seems all that creative energy was just too much for some of us, as Daisy decided Shane’s artwork was the perfect place for a little nap! 😴🤣 Apparently, his masterpiece was so relaxing it doubled as a mattress! 🎨💤

Who knew art group could be so magical… and so exhausting?! 😂🍄

What a brilliant morning with the group today, led by the one and only agazart💕

It swiftly kicked in true Aga style… “Let’s get creative!” Whoop! 🙌🎨

🎉🎂 It was Mary’s birthday yesterday, so obviously cake was needed! And not just for Mary either… Clive even managed a bit with his elevenses! 😂

Then came the decoupaging jars… and, well, things got a little sticky! 😂 Especially when everyone started trying to instruct each other and take the mickey. Aga soon took control with a very firm… “Put your hairdryers down and listen!!!” 🤣🤣

Even Sandra put down her crochet hook and got stuck in! 🧶➡️🎨

And Myra’s concentrating again! 👅👅😂 Although I must say, your horse in the background is absolutely outstanding! 🐴👏

There was plenty of our usual side-splitting banter, especially from the two in the corner… Mary and Shane! 😂 Meanwhile, Sue and Andrea were absolute stars and completely in the zone with their creations. 🌟

And we can’t forget our two very excited spectators, Daisy and Pickle! 🐶🐶 I wonder what their decoupage pieces would have looked like?! 😂

Sally definitely topped it though when she casually announced that her evening was going to be a talk about mermaids at Marjon… no mermen apparently! 🧜‍♀️😂

By then I thought I’d better leave them to it and get on with tackling my own house painting job! 🎨🏠

Another lovely session filled with creativity, cake, laughter and, of course, plenty of banter. ❤️

HOW CAN I BE HAPPY WHEN THERE IS SO MUCH WRONG IN THE WORLD?
A wonderful answer by a Buddhist monk:

A man once asked an old Buddhist monk:

“How can I allow myself to feel peace or happiness when the world is full of suffering, injustice, pain, and chaos?”

The monk looked at him quietly and asked:

“If your house was dark, would you refuse to light a candle simply because the whole world is not yet bright?”

The man fell silent.

“The suffering of the world is real,” the monk continued. “But if you destroy your own peace completely, you may lose the clarity and strength needed to help anyone.”

“But isn’t being happy selfish when others are suffering?” the man asked.

The monk smiled gently.

“Caring about suffering does not require you to suffer every moment. Compassion needs a steady heart. When you are consumed by despair, it becomes harder to respond with wisdom.”

Then the monk pointed toward a nearby pond.

“When the water is disturbed, it cannot reflect clearly. But when it becomes still, everything becomes easier to see.”

He looked back at the man.

“The same can happen with the mind. A restless mind may react with fear, anger, or hopelessness. A calmer mind has more space for wisdom, compassion, and meaningful action.”

The man lowered his head.

“But the world still feels so heavy.”

“Yes,” the monk replied. “And that is why your peace matters.”

“Do not try to carry the suffering of the entire world in one heart.

Be kind where you are.
Help where you can.
Speak gently.
Protect what you can.
Reduce suffering in whatever small ways are within your reach.”

“A single candle cannot remove all the darkness in the world,” he said, “but it can still brighten the room around it.”

In Buddhism, happiness is not about ignoring suffering or pretending that everything is fine. It is about developing enough inner stability to remain compassionate without being completely consumed by the pain you witness.

You are allowed to feel joy while caring about the world. You are allowed to rest while others are struggling. And you can protect your peace not to escape responsibility, but to have the strength to meet suffering with greater wisdom and compassion.

The monk smiled one final time:

“Do not extinguish your own light because the world is dark.

Keep it burning.

Then use that light to make the small part of the world around you a little brighter.”

Despite some devastating news about Teddy, our cheeky little studio dog, whom we will all miss terribly coming into the studio, today was filled with creativity, laughter and a real sense of community. ❤️🐾

We had such a lovely time at our Knit, Crochet & Natter group today — the studio was absolutely buzzing!

We were delighted to welcome three new people, and it was wonderful to see everyone getting stuck in and being so productive. There was lots of chatting, sharing, teaching and, of course, plenty of making. 🧶☕️

I had the absolute pleasure of teaching crochet rag rugs again to 2 people who have never tried, a real passion of mine. ❤️ We even had people ripping up old sheets ready to turn them into beautiful, useful rugs — giving materials a new life rather than letting them go to waste.

Meanwhile, Mark was busy photographing his work to contribute towards the Royal William Yard Hope, Home & Homeless exhibition, and several of us have been creating art pieces for it too. 🎨

And then there’s Teri, who is completely obsessed with her crochet octopus and matching hats! 🐙😂 They’re all destined for Ukraine, along with so many other wonderful handmade items.

Tash was teaching one of our new members how to crochet squares, while also making her beautiful cotton face cloths — again, all going to Ukraine. 🇺🇦 We collect our donated makes and drop them off at Puma in Plymouth, so they can continue their journey to people who need them.

And you should have seen the incredible amount of wool donated by Teri’s mum, along with all the beautiful handmade items she has created and donated for Ukraine. Truly amazing. 🧶❤️

It really makes you stop and think about what a small handful of people can achieve when they come together.

We are all learning from each other.
We are all contributing something.
We are all creating something.
And together, we are making a difference.

From a ball of donated wool, an old sheet, a crochet hook or a pencil — something beautiful can emerge. And sometimes, those small acts of creativity and kindness travel much further than we ever realise. ❤️

So, despite the sadness of saying goodbye to Teddy, today was a lovely reminder of why these groups matter so much.

Keep going, everyone. Keep creating, keep sharing, keep supporting each other. 🧶🎨❤️

I find it incredible how, in just a few hours, a simple piece of paper, some pencils, brushes and a little water can be transformed into something so beautiful. 🤩🎨

And that’s exactly what makes our Tuesday free art sessions so special. There’s no pressure to be an artist, no expectation to create a masterpiece and no need for expensive materials. Just come along, have a go and enjoy the process. ✏️🖌️💧

What I love most is that it’s not just about the art. These sessions bring like-minded people together — we chat, share ideas, encourage each other, learn new things and, of course, enjoy a good cuppa along the way. ☕️💕

Everyone works at their own pace, whether you’re sketching a portrait, experimenting with colour, practising drawing eyes or simply trying something completely new.

There’s something wonderfully relaxing about putting your phone down, picking up a pencil and giving yourself permission to simply create.

A few hours later, you look at what you’ve made and think… “Wow, I actually did that!” 🥰

Our Tuesday sessions are free, friendly and open to anyone who would like to come along and create with us. Come for the art, stay for the company — and leave with something you’ve made yourself. 🎨✨
