Alma Yard

Alma Yard A new, enriched work environment for Plymouth’s creative community. The perfect place to create, collaborate and innovate.

A revitalised window factory, Alma Yard is comprised of a series of buildings dating back to the mid 19th century and is set to become home to a community of creatives drawn to Plymouth’s burgeoning arts scene and relaxed pace of life. Located on an iconic coastal rise, the site’s period features such as an original car lift are illuminated by streams of natural light and lofty spaces. These uniqu

e facets enrich the studios and workspaces, becoming the backdrop to this new and inspiring Eat Work Art location. Just a short walk from Plymouth’s city centre, Alma Yard will be a thriving hub of creativity. The perfect environment to create, collaborate, and innovate.

Looking back at ‘The Spirit of Landscape’ exhibition by resident .artstudio last month. Inspired by the connection between emotion and place, the exhibition invited guests to reflect on landscape as something experienced as much inwardly as it is observed, where atmosphere and perception quietly inform what we see. “It’s a space where people can come to socialise and collaborate, or simply work quietly in a supportive environment, with no pressure to be productive. Now in its fourth year, it has grown a strong, supportive core community and become part of the wider Plymouth creative scene.”

“The idea for PDF began with a simple goal: to connect Plymouth’s creative minds and build a stronger, more collaborative design community. We saw an opportunity to elevate the city’s creative profile by fostering
connections, sharing knowledge, and celebrating the incredible talent that’s right here in Plymouth.”

We’re proud to be sponsoring Plymouth Design Forum for a second year in 2025. PDF is an inspirational event series that both celebrates the design talent in Plymouth and brings the opportunity to hear talks from nationally recognised design legends in our city. Founded by two of Plymouth’s very own local legends James Edgar and Darren Foley, we caught up to find out their inspiration for starting the event, highlights from the last 7 years and what’s coming up in the future.

As we reflect on 2024, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate the incredible achievements and inspiring creativity displayed by our resident community. From residents breaking new ground in photography, design and architecture to those who have chosen our space to refine their visual art and push their practice to new heights, every individual has contributed to a culture of innovation and collaboration.

We’re grateful to our residents who have transformed their studios into true sanctuaries for themselves, their clients, and all who enter our studio spaces. These environments don’t just support the creative work happening within; they help nurture Plymouth’s thriving creative spirit.

Looking to 2025, we can’t wait to see these spaces continue to evolve and thrive as Plymouth grows as a nationally recognised hub for arts and culture.

Wishing everyone at Alma Yard, Light Studios and the wider community that help make these places special, a very Happy New Year.

'The most exciting emerging trend since I started working in the tattoo industry almost 10 years is the scope of what is available to clients looking for a unique piece of artwork. Tattooing has come a long way from picking a design off a wall and tattoo artists are actively encouraged to create pieces of art rather than those classic designs. [] Many clients have now become “art collectors” which is a very positive thing to see as tattooing is finally starting to be appreciated as an art form in its own right.'

We delved into the evolution of tattoo artistry with and her studio at Alma Yard. More in our stories 📩
