The Basildon Players

The Basildon Players The Basildon Players was formed in 1963, although our roots go back to the 1950's, and as such we are the longest established theatrical company in Essex. A. Q.

The fact that you are reading this page means that you already have an interest in Amateur Dramatics. Perhaps you my have 'dabbled' in amateur dramatics in the past, or perhaps you have little or no experience but are keen to find out more. In either case, this page should give you an insight into what we're all about. The Basildon Players was formed in 1963, although our roots go back to the late

1950's, and as such we are the longest established theatrical company in the district.
When and where do we meet? We rehearse twice weekly on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 8-10pm at: Woodlands School, East Hall, Basildon

Q. Are there any restrictions? Just one - The minimum age is 16 - but there is no upper limit. What type of shows do you do and how often? We aim to stage about three productions each year, and always try to provide a varied programme. This gives everyone the opportunity to experience different aspects of the theatre. You may have a desire to do a pantomime or more serious drama, or you might want to take part in a musical and sketches review. Whatever your preferences, there is always the chance to try something new. What if I don't want to act? No problem. There are many areas of amateur dramatics besides being on stage, although people do not often see these! For instance there are backstage roles - tage management, props and lighting to name but a few. Then there's directing, producing, publicity events, front of house duties - the list is endless. We also construct and design our own scenery, which is an activity all players take part in. So as you can see - amateur dramatics has more to offer than you might realise. What about the social life? We are a friendly group who have as many theatre trips, bowling evenings, quiz nights and other suggested get together's as possible! How is the group organised? A committee is elected annually at a general meeting. This consists of a chairman, secetary, treasurer, membership secretary, publicity officer, social secretary and two committee members. The committee meets on a regular basis to deal with the groups general business, usually centered around the current production. What does it cost? Very little! The subs paid cover the cost of hiring our rehearsal venue and are currently £3 per week.

This weeks Player Of The Week is Billie-Jean Stewart & this is what she has to say about her life with The Basildon Players:

“Hi everyone, I’m Billie and I have been part of the Basildon Players for the past 3 years.

I have really enjoyed bing part of the group and they have really helped me with improving my confidence on stage. Previously I had been part of another drama group & I decided to join the Basildon Players to help improve my dramatic skills.

The group are all very friendly & being part of them is like being part of a family.

I’m sad that we have had to postpone ‘Volunteers’, but I am really looking forward to my role in ‘Mother Goose’.

I hope that you will all be able to come & see us on stage around Christmas time!”

The Basildon Players are sad to announce that due to the current Coronavirus pandemic we will be postponing our next production, Volunteers.

The health of our members & the public who come to see our shows is of great importance to us and we felt this to be the best choice given the unfortunate circumstances.

We still hope to bring Volunteers to the stage at a later date & will post updates as and when they are available.

This weeks Player Of The Week is Alan Roy & this is what he has to say about his life with The Basildon Players:

“I have been asked to write a short story of how I became a Basildon Player. Well I haven’t acted since school and I’m 67 now. But I have always fancied having a go, but had no idea where to go and who to ask.

One day I googled the Basildon Towngate theatre and I noticed they mentioned The Basildon Players were the oldest am dram group in the area and so I followed the link. Well I popped into one of their rehearsal nights and I was made so welcome. You soon realise that actors are a very friendly bunch. Even though they had started rehearsals for the next show, they wrote me into the show. And I was hooked.

I have now been with the Players for over two years and because of circumstances I have had some starring roles. In the show Hi De Hi I was Ted Bovey. This was unusual for such a new member to have such a big role to play. This was partly because we were short of men at the time and I am of a size that fits the role of Ted.

I am proud to say that Hi De Hi was nominated for a NODA award. It was probably the most stressful part I have played. But boy I am proud I did it. There is only one thing that holds most people back from being an actor. You can’t be shy. But even if you are shy, as some of our cast were when they joined. We helped them over it and now they take on parts they never thought they could.

Please come to our shows and support us. Or even take the leap and try coming to a rehearsal. We meet at the Bowers and Pitsea social club most Monday and Wednesday evenings. What have you got to lose?”
